hey guys im looking at a used ranger 12 gauge and the guy says it has a fixe modified choke...

question is are these chokes interchangable? if not how do i change it

What can a modified choke do.. can I hunt waterfowl? can i hunt big game? can i shoot slugs out of it

thanks guys

Fixed choke is just that, fixed, only way to change is change a whole barrel out.
Mod can be use for quite a bit but most fixed chokes are only reccomended for lead based shotgun shells, would make a good skeet gun, so id say waterfowl no go, big game like you can used a rifled slug from that barrel no problem.

Depends how quick you can get a shot or two off.
For grouse, I prefer the modified choke verses a full choke.
If the deal is good, it may be worthy of getting it threaded for
screw in chokes.
Provided the barrel wall has enough thickness for such an adjustment.

X2. And yes, the barrel has plenty of meat on 'er for screw in chokes.:)

For the cost of installing chokes in that barrel you might as well find a 1200 or 1300 with chokes and a vent rib. Unless you are getting the gun free. And don't pay over $200 for one of those old plain barrel 2 3/4" winchesters.

Sounds like you need to read more about the basics of shotguns. This is fairly good article about 'em. http://www.texashuntworks.com/index.php/Articles/Featured-Articles/Shotgun-Basics.html
"...these chokes interchangable..." Fixed means one choke. Modified isn't a horrible one to have though. A slug won't hurt it, but it's made for upland game. It'll do for waterfowl at 30 yards or so. The ammo has a lot to do with distance.
A 'Ranger' is an entry level shotgun. Entry level in that its fit and finish aren't high end. It'll do nicely. It a pump gun or semi? Only matters when you look for a barrel. If you do so.

I'd have no issue shooting steel through the modified choke. However, it should be pattern tested to see exactly what kind of pattern it is throwing. What's marked on the barrel and what it actually does might not quite be the same.
