I was looking at some factory ammo and noticed that winchester makes a silver tip in most calibers for a couple of bucks more a box then the regular power point stuff. This stuff has been around for a while i think so my question is what is the point of the metal covering the tip? Other then look ###y does it actual penetrate deeper than a regular pp or other cup n core?? Im sure the advertising is all over various "benefits" but i am wondering if in actual hunting use this has any advantage? Depending on feedback i may pick up a box to try for giggles. Thanks

I think that Winchester Silvertips have been round since the beginning of time. They may be around even longer than the power points??? Probably been such a staple for Winchester that they are reluctant to discontine? Now they keep em for an extra label or choice.

Levi, are you saying that the silvertips actually open up faster than a regular cup n core design? I was thinking of trying some 180 30-06 or 170 30-30 but i dont think i need FASTER opening, a regular bullet seem just fine in that regard :)

Luke I have tried them in factory ammo a long while back, and they worked great . I also think their not as prone to damage as some others are. Would I recomend them, you bet, would not turn my nose at PP's or the remmy Bronze point bullets of old.
I think we get caught up with all the fancy stuff , when perfectly fine components have been around a long time. :runaway:

isn't the silver tip some form of polycarbonate tip like a vmax or ballistic tip?
better expansion or ballistic coefficient....?

What you are thinking of is the ballistic silver tip which is a collaboration between nosler and winchester. The silver tip is actually an aluminium alloy that covers a large soft point.

Amen to that! I think the standard Winchester and Remingtons work just fine for most of our needs. There might be a small need for some of the specialty bullets or premium bullets but its more sales hype than needed.

Here is a cross section, not the babies I was talking about :D The ones I ment were the old winchesters:redface: with the huge chunk a metal on the nose :D
