So I needed a small shotgun for canoe/hiking trips this summer and didn't want to take a chance with the Dominion arms backpacker. Here is the result. It is a Winchester 37a 20 gauge shotgun (Macleods 60th anniversary model) Barrel cut and stock modified. OAL is 26 1/2". When taken down it packs up super small and is pretty light.

Nice work! Way lighter then the "backpacker".

I've got an old Cooey that is similar and one thing you will have to watch out for is the tang lever!

It won't feel good with heavy loads if it hits the web of your hand....might want to try shooting it with the thumb on the same side of the stock as your trigger finger.

edit. Just a thought... A strap on the foreend might not be a bad idea to help spread the recoil between both arms without having to pu a death grip on the wood which looks pretty smooth at this point.

Happy trails!

Now that you've proudly shown the world what you've done, what would you do differently?

(I have painful memories of pistol grip shotguns. Given the choice, you might have been wiser to leave the full stock ...)

Even with no stock and little weight that thing should be easy to handle. My first shotgun was a light cut-down single shot 20g when I was 7. I think it will make a good pack gun, capable of bagging dinner and could be used for defense in a pinch.

I will try to get out this weekend and try it out. I debated on the pistol grip but wanted something i could bring everywhere without drawing undue attention - I want to keep it stowed away in a pack where no one will know it is there. (hopefully i won't need to use it!)

I will post some results of how it shoots later. The intent is not for defense so I will try some loads that would be suitable for grouse, squirrels and rabbits.

to shoot this pistol grip gun accurately put a looped single point sling on it and loop it over your shoulder pulling the gun away from you.this will help to steady the gun. not as good as a shoulder stock but it does work .this is called kentucky carry.like what you have done.have fun and be safe.farmer 47

Curious...do you need to notify the CFC, and get a new Reg. Cert. for it now that the barrel length has changed?

.

Yes you do.

It's not that difficult to do. If there are no other guns already under that class than it may need to be verified, but if it has been done and registered, than it is as simple as a phone call.

I believe you are now in possesion of a prohibited weapon sawded of shotgun is illegal

The term, 'Sawed-off" typically referese the the barrel, not the stock. Techinacally , yes that is a "Sawed-off" but it is still legal.

Definition of a Prohibited Firearm

The Criminal Code states that a prohibited firearm is:

* a handgun with a barrel length of 105 mm (4.1 inches) or less;
* a handgun designed or adapted to discharge 25 or 32 calibre ammunition;
* a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make it less than 660 mm (26 inches) in overall length;
* a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make the barrel length less than 457 mm (18 inches) where the overall firearm length is 660 mm (26 inches) or more;
* an automatic firearm and a converted automatic firearm;
* any firearm prescribed as prohibited.

The correct wording is:

rifles and shotguns that have been altered so that their barrel length is less than 457 mm (about 18 inches) or their overall length is less than 660 mm (about 26 inches);

"Or" would suggest it is one or the other. It does not say "and"!!!
