I've been looking to buy a new 12ga. pump action shotgun. I took a look at the remington 870 and the winchester SXP black shadow.

I've been to my local gunshop. They both felt nice in hand, but the finish on the remington seemed really poor (it was a new gun and already had a few scratches here and there). I've also heard that the finish was a common issue with the 870.

I wasn't able to find a lot of info on the SXP though. I'd like to know your opinion if you guys tried it. I'm really thinking about buying it, but i'm a bit skeptical about its inertia-assisted slide-action.

Any toughts?

Thanks!

I have the SX2 and its never let me down.. Puts the 870 to shame.

I recently bought a SXP Defender as a backpack gun. I love it. The finish it great, recoil pad is great. The action is smooth and it's easy to take down. I've put 15 slugs and one box of birdshot through it. All 40 rounds were put through it in <5 min, I really just wanted to test the reliability of it with both 3" and 2.75" shells and it worked flawlessly. I can't say enough good things about it for the price.

Obviously I won't be able to tell you how it patterns, but I can't see it being a bad performer in that regard.

This is coming from someone who has shot and handled several different models of shotgun, including big $$ autoloaders.

The SXP for sure, just for the better finish and weather resistance. Oh and its a Winchester!

The BBQ paint finish on the new 870's rusts the second misty air is around you unless you keep it well oiled.

i just purchased a winchester sxp black shadow a couple weeks ago and love it. the recoil pad feels nice and i love how the inertia slide action works so far nothing wrong with it. Have not taken the time to pattern but would like to being im going to take it gose hunting this fall. i can sure hit skeets with it though. one thing i recommend is to get a good quality brass bead for. mine was broken from factory but the shop i got it from was willing to replace it with no charge being i had been waiting over 6 months for it.

Winchester SXP black shadow

I own one and would have to agree with the good things the other CNGrs are saying. Fit and finish is excellent. The action is very smooth and it functions flawlessly. I would have to say it is nicer than the Benelli Super Nova which has a similiar rotary bolt that locks into the barrel. No doubt Benelli borrowed this idea from Winchester. (Sorry Italian gun guys but the truth sometimes hurts) Inertia assist performs just the way it is supposed to. My model came with the 18 inch defender barrel and a 28 inch field barrel with invector chokes. It shoots well with slugs and patterns well with 00 buck. The 28 inch barrel is very accurate particularly with a full choke. I guarantee that you will be able to empty the mag faster than any other pump gun out there.
