For those who know the answers please respond.

I have a SXP Typhon Defender 18 inch Invector Plus shotgun chambered for 2 & 3/4 and 3 inch shells.

I bought an SXP 28 inch barrel chambered for 2 & 3/4, 3, and 3 & 1/2 inch shells

I installed it using an aluminum spacer so the barrel nut would tighten and hold the barrel in place. I have no intention of shooting 3 & 1/2 inch shells.

My question to those who may know...

Is there any difference between a 3 inch and the 3.5 inch SXP action, or is it just the barrel that is different?

Winchester issued a recall for the 3 1/2" chambered guns in 2018 as they could (and did) fire when closing the action. Since the recall was only for 3 1/2" guns I would assume the action is different enough to exclude 2 3/4" and 3" capable guns from the recall.

I can't say for sure but I think they might be different. I have the 3" sxp and my son has the 3 1/2" sxp. I just asked him to measure his receiver and he says it's 8.5 on the bottom from the front of the receiver to the part where it joins the stock, 9 on the top. That should give you a rough idea if there's a length difference.
I'm not currently where my sxp is so can't compare.
He also says it may be the same, but the ejection port is cut longer and that there's a dust cover mounted to the bolt to cover the extra length.
It really shouldn't matter though since you're only using 2 3/4 and 3".

I have a similar set-up. 18” Defender with an extra 28” barrel. But, only 3” shell. Not sure if you can use 3 1/2” shells as the ejection port might be smaller. My suggestion, try cycling the action using a dummy round. To check for the dreaded slam fire, load a dummy round with masking tape on top of the dummy primer, and slam the recoil pad against a wooden surface. If the tape is hit, then you have a problem. Call Winchester and get it fixed.
