Hey ive been looking at buying a winchester SXP. Mainly for shooting trap/skeet and a lil bit of fun in the bush. not interested in it for HD. ive looked around at some reviews and most were pretty positive except for the lack of accessories for it. this to me isnt a problem as i dont see the need for adding a bunch of weight to my gun. Does anyone on here have one or shot one that could tell me a little bit about it from their experience? good or bad.

thank alot.

Just bought one a few weeks ago based upon the same reports I guess it fits my POA purpose of use but still trying to find a place to give it a work out though.

I liked it's multifunction as I got the combo set. (Some good weather would help)

Picked one up a while back, also a combo deal (28" vent rib w/ interchangeable chokes and 18.5" Defender fixed cylinder bore).

Unfortunately, like silverfoxdj, have not fired her off yet. I will post back in this thread when I do so and let you know how it went.

I ran about 500 rounds through one
I was impressed by how smooth it was and pointed really nice its on my short list of guns too get sorry I cant help anymore then that.

It's a excellent shotgun, especially for the price. I've owned a few different pumps and the SXP is the only one I've kept. I don't think I'll ever sell it. Can't find anything wrong with it. It's well made and it's a very light shotgun too. Great if you're carrying it all day, not so great if you shoot a lot of 3.5" shells. It fits me perfectly, so I can shoot it a lot better than other brand's I've had. Probably a few thousand rounds through it by now and no issues. It was smooth out of the box and only got better over time. It automatically ejects the shell after the shot, not really a big deal but not a bad feature either. Makes for fast follow up shots. It comes with the 3 standard Invector Plus choke tubes, chrome lined and back bored barrel. The receiver is aluminum and I think the mag tube is also. The trigger is a bit different. It's pull is more of an "back and up" motion. I don't notice it anymore, and it's never really been a problem. It comes with a good recoil pad already installed. It's made in Turkey if that matters to you. Some don't like that but look one over and I challenge you to find something wrong in its fit, finish or function. Everyone who's shot it asks "where can I get one?" or "how much you want for it?" If I have any complaints it's that the grip areas could be gripper and its a real pain to get the plastic clean once you get dried mud on it. For a shotgun in it's price range, it's a tough deal to beat.

They are basically the same gun as the older Winchester 1200/1300/2100/2200 pump actions. They are great guns that will give you years of dependable service. I have an older 2200 with over 40 000 rds thru it and it's still going strong.

I bought mine almost a year ago, and have put about 7400 to 7500 rounds through it and only a small indent in the hammer, but does not cause any issues. It is a great gun for the money, I use it for trap and skeet almost exclusively.

It is very light, yet the recoil is minimal. Accessories market is almost non-existant, though there are a few companies making after market stocks for them now. Disassembly and cleaning are insanely easy, easier then the Remington 870 and a hell of a lot simpler then the Mossberg 500.

My only gripe about this gun is that the forearm has a fair bit of play in it, just doesn't feel as stiff as it should, kinda wiggles side to side. But this does not affect it's performance, just annoying.

hope this gives you a better idea of what to expect. Definitely worth buying, you will not be disappointed

I purchased my SXP 2 months ago. 250 rounds later, I have fallen in love with it. The action, the feel, everything about this gun just...works. I went through 3 other shotguns that went back to point of sale due to serious problems. Got this one, never looked back. My only issue is I got the 28" barrel. And with no aftermarket following yet, buying an 18" barrel after the fact is near impossible. (that I can find anyway) But you can buy the 28" barrel aftermarket. Buying the 18" barrel gun and the 28" barrel to swap in would have been better. Hind sights 20/20 though :p

If you haven't purchased one yet, I am in the vancouver area and am going to the vancouver gun club every other wed to shoot skeet/trap in the afternoon. If your available, and pay your own daypass/ammo your more than welcome to throw some rounds through my SXP.

On one other note, my fellow SXP owners. I have a request. I was wondering if anyone could take a picture of their SXP, specifically looking through the open action looking down the barrel. Noticed something about mine looks different than my other shotguns, but not sure if this is just the way the SXP looks, or if mine isn't put together quite right. I will take a picture of mine as well and post it. Just a curiosity thing more than anything.

I have a defender and had a 28" one as well. Sold the 28" as I didnt use it really but they both work perfectly. The 18.5 is a dream to shoot. Not one problem in a few cases of shells.

I have the camp field combo synthetic, fantastic shorty great price. I can do skeet no problem with it. Crisp trigger and fast follow up shots because of what feels to be a short action. Compared 870 when buying it, SXP felt lighter and preferred the action, $50 more for extra 18" barrel.

Hey, I picked up an sxp about 2 months ago and I'm very happy with it. I'm a pretty serious trap shooter and have a couple o/u's so compared to those it felt a little sloppy but still broke targets very well. I've used it at the cottage for shooting hand thrown clays as well and it worked awesome. I haven't had it out hunting but I've shot a few different hunting loads and I've been happy with how they shot at the targets I had set up. The recoil is also the softest I've ever had from using a pump, which makes the second shot much easier and more accurate. I would highly recommend this shotgun.

Is the softer felt recoil a result of the rotary bolt?

The biggest reason the SXP has less perceived recoil than most other pump actions is because of the flatter stock design it has versus the more angled stocks the competition offers.

I had one, and I liked everything about it. Except for the previous owner, he tried some home gunsmithing on it and made it completely unsafe. Couldn't repair it completely, but made it safe, and I traded it on something else.

ya unfortunately the stores around here didnt have any in stock and didnt realllly know when they would be getting more. Ended up picking a mossberg 500 field/defense combo instead for the time being. but definately will be getting an sxp when they get some in stock out here.

Does anyone know where a person could find a 28" barrel for one of these? A friend purchased the HD model but now wants to use it for trap/skeet but can't find one of the 28" barrels anywhere.

If its the Defender model I don't think you can change the barrel out. Pretty sure the Defender has a longer mag tube than the other versions. A 28" field barrel will not fit because the section that fits over the end of the mag tube where the cap would hold it in place is located further back on the barrel. You'd have to get the Camp/Field combo version to get both options on one shotgun.
