Disclaimer: I'm new.

I've got a .223 rifle on the way but I won't be set up to load it for a couple months. A local store has a few boxes of Winchester USA ammo for sale and I'm wondering if there is any reason the brass from that ammo might not be suitable for reloading. I'm thinking it would be nice to be able to just go out and shoot when my rifle shows up and then I can keep the brass until I'm set up for re-loading it.

I use a fair amount of Winchester brass for reloading; it works well for me. Most of my realoading is done from brass I have picked up after firing of factory ammo.

Look at it this way. In the USA they use about 15 times more ammunition than we do in Canada. The USA has about 15 reloaders, for every reloader in Canada.
Do you think a major company, like Winchester, would sell ammunition that would have brass unsuitable for reloading?
This is not meant to be sarcastic, or smart ass in any way. Rather, it is meant to bring out the point that a successful reloader has to be able to figure out basic things on his own.
In this age of gross litigation, I think the loading manuals and other material related to reloading, have the new reloaders completely brainwashed. DO NOT DO ANYTHING, UNLESS IT SAYS SO IN THIS BOOK.

I'm not a successful reloader ...yet. My press is in the mail.

The main reason I asked is because I just found out that some .45 brass uses small pistol primers and most use large pistol primers. I thought there might be similar differences possible with other calibers.

Buy it now, check to see that it's the same lot #,this may help when reloading later. Most of us have gone that route at some time. 1 fired 223 brass is cheap, 10-15 c per so u can pick lots if you want.

I like Winchester brass, always keep a good supply of it in all calibers I shoot. The only other brass that I use is Lapua and IVI, I consider Win just as good for reloading. Have reloaded thousands of rounds in WWB brass with no issues whatsoever.

Happy Reloading. Welcome!

You got it right...
That's the way to go...
Winchester, Remington, Federal all great brass and excellent for reloading.
I just mentioned the three manufacturers, because they are most common.

Then why wasn't that the question asked?
You simply wanted to know if USA Winchester brass was suitable to reload.

Because if I had asked a question with a narrow subject I would have gotten an answer with a narrow subject, then I would have had to ask again whether or not there was anything else I should know about.

You don't have to answer if you don't want to. :runaway:

Yes, Winchester Brass (or any commercial ammo's brass) is junk. Send it to me! :) I will dispose of it for you! :D

Kidding... Winchester brass from ammo is the same you buy in the blue & white Winchester bags as new brass. Only difference is you got to enjoy shooting it first.

As for the .45ACP, even the WIN NT brass is reloadable. Just some people are too lazy to change their primer feeders to accept the small primers. Other people cannot change the primer feeders for the caliber (Lee Pro1000) because of the shell carrier. I use it for my IPSC matches since we don't get a chance to recover all our brass at a match. I load mine on my Loadmaster as it's easy to change the primer feeder.

And in my first reply I should have used the word, "potential," before the words, "--successful reloader---."

You're right, I should probably give up now. Asking questions that annoy you is a sure sign that a person is destined to fail. Anybody want to buy an XL650? ;) You should have paid more attention to my disclaimer and hit the back button before you went any further.

Thanks for the answers guys.
