I'm currently refurbishing a couple of our Clubs older Winchester Western Electric Self Loading Skeet/Trap machines. I'd like to change the oil in them. Before I drain the old oil out I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what use in the main gearbox? I've looked on-line and spoke with some of the veterans from the club. Answers so far range from automatic transmission to 40W engine oil. Hoping for some advice from someone who's done it.

Thanks in advance.

get a hold of Ian Brotherson at western retro, he sells, repairs and maintains winchester western traps. i changed oil in mine about 10 years ago, i believe i used 30 weight oil. there is also a solenoid that requires trans oil. he has a website, check him out.

Thx Hogiron.

I've watched Brotherson's video on You-tube. The machines I'm working on don't have the recoil unit takes the ATF. He mentions 30W for the gear case in the video.

glad to help.
i've had an old winchester white flyer machine for about 20 years, i oil it once every year before use. still working.
i've added a 270 bird turret, i have one of the last that were made of aluminum, i believe they are all stainless steel now.

The manuals are posted on Western Retro site, I believe.
The Instruction pages for 1524, 1579, and 1581 machines specifies SAE 20 weight oil.

Fifty years ago ATF started showing up in gearbox's of new motorcycles much to the amazement of many. Today if in doubt I would put it in just about anything but an engine crankcase or a high heat application. You can change it later but it will get you through the day.
