winchester White box vs American Eagle .223 Rem

Is there any diiference in quality, and accuracy between the two brands in .223?

I find it depends on the bullet weight(s) for starters, out of my 700P and mini 14 they are fairly equal, If your looking for pretty accurate (read cheap) ammo I simply love the rem. umc in the 55 gr / FMJ shoots like a hot damn out of my 700P and for 5.99 a box who could complain ?????

I find that the win and fed both shoot well with the fed shooting a bit better but the win brass is way better for reloading, the fed brass sucks.

The fed brass is ok, it's usually Lake City NATO brass (usually LC '06 marked), with crimped pockets. Some of the benchrest guys like NATO brass as it's somewhat thicker and tolerates hotter loads better

The older fed brass had loose primer pockets that would drop out primers after the first reloading. I haven't tried loading the newer nato spec marked stuff.

The AE .223 55Gr that is produced by Lake City (marked with a LC and the NATO symbol) is a good plinking round IMO for the price. However the crimped in primers are somewhat of a pain to get out, it is GOOD brass.

That being said, since my 500 round case of the AE stuff is out I am going for some Winchester for $730/2400. To high, but a good stash and good brass to use when I get my dies for reloading.

Lake City brass is THE brass to use in .223 for those who haven't had the pleasure. Best military brass out there!

This comes from someone who exclusively shoots Winchester brass for everything. But I have a 5K stash of LC 5.56mm for the good stuff!

For $730 you can get yourself set up for reloading complete with dies and all the componets, including new brass.

I was wondering about the AE ammunition, is it mil spec 5.56mm? Or did AE just reload the casings?

Federal owns lake city. It's all the same stuff, and meets both civvy and nato specs

I've found some decent priced Federal AE .223, but the boxes are marked 2004. Will the brass for this stuff be lousy?

The Federal shoots great, but no better than WWB, and who wants to deal with crimped primers? Makes reloading a pain.

The Federal isn't 5.56, it's SAAMI .223, regardless of the brass stamp. If it was 5.56 is would be sold as such (and currently, wouldn't be exported).

I don't see crimping on the primers of these federal cartridges. The bullets are crimped in though.

I get .350 to .500" groups @ 100m with the win whitebox .223 ammo from my 700 VSSF II. great way to "make" brass for a rifle.

I have had good luck with the White box from Walmart, nice groups
the American Eagle stuff I couldn't get a decent group

I don't see crimping on the primers of these federal cartridges. The bullets are crimped in though.

The punched in circle around the primer is the crimp.

Nope, don't have a reloading setup
Just keep squirreling away brass until I get one.

What IS the secret to reloading the FC brass?? I've tried and tried.. Now I have a bag of it I don't know what to do with. I can't get a primer into them!!?!?!



Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread, but I just happened to be reading this about 20 minutes after I was trying to reload the FC brass and thought it might be a good idea to ask!! LOL
