Well Im flipping a coin on which one of these to get
prefer the wood stock on the wildcat, and the fact its slightly less common at the range (never handled one, would have to mail order)
Trigger is a concern (cant try before I buy)and I keep thinking no parts available, but I really dought I'll wear anything out.
The savage, well it seems everyone has one, maybe that should tell me something tho.
Im just after an inexpensive heavy barreled bolt for informal target shooting.
I have seen the cz varmit, but Im going to try this route first.
Anyone got an opinion?

Well, another bolt action .22 is a few notches down the list for me...but since I've almost bought a Wildcat a few times, and dig Savages, I'll chime-in.

I've never shot a Toz, or even seen one up close (Toz being the Russian Company that makes the Wildcats for Winchester) but have heard they are good rifles. I've also heard that there is some plastic components in them, but I can't confirm that. What I DO know is that every Savage I've shot, I've liked. In fact, I sold my most recent Savage .17 HMR and I'm sort of wishing I hadn't. I just shoot .22 more often, so it made sense. Anyhow, they're both shooters if you can believe the reports you hear online. I just like the idea of a more domestic product, if it's as good, for the peace of mind that service/parts will be easy should it be needed.

As a side note, I was playing with one of their 93R17 TRR rifles at Epps the last time I was there, and almost bought it. What I really liked was the over-sized bolt handle, great for my big mitts...probably good for use with gloves in colder weather as well. Since then, I've noticed an all black Savage .22 that sort of has a "tactical" aesthetic to it, and it's in the Mark II lineup~the Mark II FV-SR. It appears to have the same bolt, and is nice an compact for carry...which I like. I plan on getting one of these. :) If I was only shooting from a bench, I'd pick a full-length barrel Mark II.

Good luck with whatever you choose,
Rob
