Father in law picked up a 1971 12 gauge 870 wingmaster on the weekend and it doesn't have the Fleur de lis or checkering on it. It has smooth stock and cob forend. Anyone know when the Fleur de lis was introduced ?

Personally I like the smooth/cob it's just every wing I see around the same year has the Fleur. The serial on the action starts with S so presume it's a 68-73. Maybe a rifled slug special with a swapped barrel? Or maybe it's a field model like you said.

I remember back in the early 1970's Remington made a plain jane Model 870 they called the AP Grade.Perhaps it is one of those models.Cannot remember if they were marked AP Grade on the shotgun or not.

There is a version of the 870 fore end that is the same dimension as the pressed checked Wingmaster but is only vertically grooved. The police wood posted by 3 macs is another version and the old AP grade from the late '50's is a very small and short vertically grooved walnut. Most by far were pressed checked. I think you may have the first version described if it is a 1970 gun.

Just looking around and I found an old Remington flyer from 1972 that lists the Model 870 AP Grade. No checkering and groved forend.A bit of an extension at the back end of the forend.Plain barrel version $109.95 and vent rib $142.95

Ap grade ran I thought from 1950 to 1963 off the top of my head or at least that is when we started to see the fluer de lis so if this is a factory 1971 it cannot be a AP or someone changed the wood
I have the 71 catalog somewhere with all of the other years too just they are buried right now in a tote somewhere in the basement so cannot lay my hands on it
If the Op would post a pic we can nail it down
Cheers

Who you calling an old Fart.LOLProblem is ,you could be right, Mac.LOL I remember looking at one of the AP Grade Remingtons back in the early 1970's.Was going to buy it or a Winchester Model 2200.Bought the Winchester Model 2200 at the time.Poor choice on my part.

The flyer was in a 1972 catalogue along with some other flyers telling of some other Remington products. One was the 10 C Remington .22 auto loader.

Police wood. Here is AP wood. Look close at the forearms.1968 TO PRESENT: LETTERS USED (IN SEQUENCE) of serial number i.e. "S". Barrel December 71 , slug guns had the same wood during those years

Almost positive I am. Looks like the plain old AP died in the fall of 62 due to poor sales from what I can find to read about it
Cheers
