Have to get it opened up to Mod at least. I had a choke tube fitted in my old 870 cost about 150 at epps. Will not pattern worth a dam with the steel shot and full choke lead barrel plus you could damage it pending what shot size you are shooting.

No experience at all. All I'll say is I picked up a brand new in bow Express barrel w/screw chokes, replaced the magazine cap to match the express barrel, and it works just fine on my wifes Wingmaster for $100 off the EE

i have an older rem 1100 mag that came with a full choke . it is no bored out to mod and shoots great with steel . you can get away with shooting small shot size in steel but that is not realy any good for water fouwl . any good smith can bore out a choke in a matter of minutes DUTCH

The smith I use charges me $25 to hone out a full to mod choke. No issues in 5 years of steel in my Wingmaster.

just checked with jason spencer of gunco in ottawa he charges 40 to open it to modified and thats what im going to do, save the hassle.

thanks again

No larger than #2 is my threshold.

regards, Darryl

Yes, no larger than #2. I fired hundreds of steel shot rounds out of mine with no problems. You will get marks, snail-trails, from the steel-shot from where the choke starts to the end of the barrel, but it doesn't split the barrel or anything.
I replaced my FC barrel with a new Rem-choke barrel, but not out of necessity.

Remington says #1 or smaller steel shot is OK through their fixed full chokes. I would expect that you would get better steel shot patterns out of a more open choke, though.

Good call on getting it opened up. My hunting buddy has a full choked 1100 and the lead into the choke i just a mess of "snail trails". I pointed this out but he is just too thick headed to do anything about it. This was from a constant diet of 3" BB's #2's... I suspect it is the BB's that are doing the damage.

"having it opened up to halfway between full and modified, improved modified i guess its called. so ill go from there. "

Good plan. I had a '57 opened up to mod and it killed ducks and geese dead.

Rem 12 ga Full choke barrels are typically 0.728" bore diameter and .700 at the choke. Have your gunsmith open the choke to somewhere in the range of .705" and you will find good patterns with shot sizes up to #1, in my experience. You don't want any more than .020" constriction at the choke and .015" seems about right.

How long is the choke at the end of the barrels typically, my auto 5 is full choke and would like to make it be able to shoot steel
