Wingmaster

So after much deliberation, shouldering, comparing features, comparing fit, I bought my wife an 870 Wingmaster two weeks ago in 20 gauge. She loves it and we've been shooting (trap and sporting clays), every weekend and are going again today.

I thought about bringing my daughter grouse hunting with it in a few weeks time, but also considered duck too. Here's the question: is this barrel made for steel shot when it comes to waterfowl?

The box says 870 wingmaster magnum, the receiver says wingmaster, and the manual says nothing but 870. No references to whether steel is safe to shoot or not. Anywhere. Remington's website makes no indication either, that I can find.

Anyone have a clue on this? I would go for it but the barrel is so thin that I'm second-guessing myself.

Did you buy it brand new? (You said you had the box...) If so, it's good to go with steel for sure!

My wife uses an 870 in 20 gauge with a 26 inch barrel if memory serves me correctly. The only issue we had was finding steel shells for her that had the velocity (1550 fps) we wanted. KENT makes them!!! I got her 1 case of #4's for ducks & 1 case of #2's for geese. She uses an improved cylinder choke tube for waterfowling, which throws a modified patter with steel shot.

Cheers
Jay

Yes, it should be fine with any steel shot if it has choke tubes. Any choke from cylinder to modified may be used.

If a fixed full choke, it can use steel shot sized #1 and smaller. Fixed choke barrels with a more open choke can use any size of steel shot.
