Winter 3Gun ?

I'm wondering what people are doing over the winter to keep in practice for 3gun. It's a shame that 3gun competitions disappear during the colder month's. I'm pretty sure my firearms still work between Oct-May, so why no 3gun meets ? Obviously the colder temps would add another factor into the mix, but, hey, why not a 3gun meet during winter ? I'd be willing to try.

I think the biggest thing that would prevent me from running a winter 3 gun is the set up. We have problems getting volunteers in the warmer months. Hauling out all the steel and props would be a lot of work for 3 or 4. Target patches and tape doesn't stick well below -10 or so and can cause some scoring issues.

We did do a 4 stage winter milsurp last year. The stages used static firing positions so less chance of a slip or fall on ice. Had grenade throwing (inert of course), shooting from a bunker and some moving targets. Of course, Murphy showed up and the winter temperatures disappeared so we had more mud than cold.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I hate every winter more than the last.
Unless it's all steel outdoor winter matches are a PITA.
Patches don't stick... Timers don't work..

ugh...

Thanks for the shoutout guys. And 667, your ###### won't freeze, you should come out to our next match ;) . Which, by the way, is tentatively scheduled for Saturday February 13th at the Galt Sportsmens club (shameless plug).

And to the OP, you are correct, firearms work just fine from Oct-May...well most do. That's the great part about our winter matches - they test your guns, gear, and mettle. We always have an awesome group of volunteers and avoid using patches...clays, steel, paper plates, timers, scoring tablets, etc. all function just fine regardless of the temps.

We also hold monthly club-level 3-gun matches all year round at Galt. We've had some wild weather for sure, but we've always had fun.

We run IDPA and 3 gun matches all year round. We have had to shovel trails through the snow to and from targets on occasion, but winter is far too long to stop enjoying the sport.

Anyone in the calgary area want to run drills with NR carbines in waiporus?
I have a spot
But I always go alone, you'll need a 4x4 to get in
Pm me

So anything in Alberta then? I'd be willing to help set up stages, as long as it not -30C.

You're either in or you're out, regardless of conditions.

Saying you want to shoot a winter match that someone else organizes, but only if it's not too cold, doesn't exactly imply dedication.
