Winter Hunt for Caribou Northern Quebec - is it still running?

For years I used to hunt in Northern Quebec during the drive up winter hunt usually late November and early December. CBC had a report the other day saying the George River Herd is almost wiped out and the hunt is over. The Outfitters camp are abandoned.

Is the winter hunt along the reservoirs still going? Maybe a different herd.

If someone actually went this year can we get some feedback on their results.

I know if you call the Outfitters, I have found they always say things are rosy and there are lot of Caribou and to come up. It is a long way to go to get lead down the garden path.

there is another the leaf river but it is on decline too ...

most of the hunts were done from Radisson lately.

Thanks Guys. I went up for five years and the people up there never treated you well. It is beautiful country and the animals were very special to see. Looks like that hunt has pretty much died now. Too bad. The caribou numbers do run a predicted cycle and they said the hunt was hopefully going to prevent the herd from crashing.

The caribou hunt is shut down in Labrador. I work where the George River herd used to migrate through, I saw no caribou this fall and the locals had not seen any either. The MNR in Newfoundland & Labrador and Quebec dropped the ball big time, the hunt should have been severely cut back or halted years ago.

Hunting is not what is wiping them out. AT MOST there would be 5000 animals taken by hunters. The herd numbers have dropped dramatically - something else is going on - predation, disease, loss of habitat, calf mortality, combination of above. But not just from hunting

if you take 5000 maybe on a million but 5000 on 100 000 that is a different story, and the problem was the calves 23% less fat than regular, body on the adult is getting smaller, the nose flies are taking a toll too there is certainly something somewhere ... the big reservoirs for Hydro didnt help either ,,, it is a whole thing but hunts should had been closed many years ago and that is coming from reports we ve done where the migration occurs ... i ve seen 10 000 caribous in one day and never again even with over flying the tundra ...
