With the dusting of snow today, I'm starting to think about winter. I regularly head out onto crown land for some snow shoeing or backcountry skiing, and wondering if there is any opportunity to bring my gun along for some game. I'm thinking hare, but don't recall seeing much more than footprints.

Do you winter hunters have any tips?

Cheers,
G

Look for well beaten snowshoe hare runs. The deeper and wider the better. Go really slow and watch for their eyes on the run. First and last light are the best. My personal favourite though is bow hunting for deer in the backcountry on snowshoes. Lots of snow makes them easy to pattern.

Wintertime is coyote calling time. Give it a try there are lots of them and it's a rewarding way to hunt them.

Rabbit hunting is awesome fun too. Cottontails with .22 rimfire....if you are after snowshoes search the edges of thick cedar swamps.

What do you do with the Coyotes? I see them out the bush without having to call them in. The Algonquin area has banned the wolf hunt, how do you tell the difference between a coyote and these coy-wolve hybrids.

Could I use my 20 gauge for rabbits or is that just asking for unnecessary shot in the meat?

Just use trap load and you'll be fine. I grew up bunny hunting with hounds and 12 ga guns.
Now without dogs I tend to use rimfires more often

Coyotes become coyote bait
