I realize there is a reload forum but this question is directly related to clay games. I load in 12/16/20/28ga's and have pet receipes for each gauge -- problem is that while they all shoot reletively clean in summer, they shoot dirty in the winter with a quantity of un-burnt powder evident in the actions. The powders I use is Red Dot, Green Dot, Unique, Longshot, Clays and Universal Clays. Any suggestions?

load more powder

Thanks for the reply -- I wouldn't think that more powder would be the answer and mat be dangerous to do it without a given receipe. -- For instance I tried a load with green dot @ 1200 fps then bumped to 1350 fps with recepies from the Lyman book -- still shot dirty with unburnt powder --- Would hotter primers help?
Cheers, John

If your breaking targets or bringing down what you shoot at what your barrel looks like after the shot doesn't matter.
Alot of powders don't burn as well in cold temps. Don't change anything you are doing. I don't touch my loaders from summer to winter and that includes the .410 the dirtiest shell out there.

A couple of ideas you my want to try. While I have not personally tried to tweak loads for cold weather, there has been some discussion over on the reloading forum on Shotgunworld. The key to getting standard powders to burn clean in cold weather is to get the pressure up over 9000 PSI. Some have done this by switching to a hotter primer such as the Federal 209A and adjusting their powder charge to keep the same velocity level. Some powders such as E3 are supposed to burn cleaner in cold weather. Unless you are shooting an autoloader, I would keep the shells warm as long as possible and run something like a bore snake or a Tico tool down your barrel when you are done shooting for the day.
