Well it's been a few years since we lost our great Lab and we are finally thinking of another hunting dog. Been reading a little about these Griffons lately and getting more interested in them. Don't hunt much waterfowl anymore, but lots of ruffed grouse and now a few sharptails thrown in. Would probably hunt showshoes if I had a dog that was interested in that. Any fGriffon owners out there that care to chime in? Family is pretty much moved along now, but we are pretty active still and live in the rural on a lake. Is a Griffon a good match for us?

Mine is going on five years old. He is a hunting fool, loves to hunt and swim.
Most impressive is his nose, I have not as yet been able to fool him nor hide anything from him in the field. Its like a muzzle mounted radar system.

He sleeps on our bed and is family. Loves everybody, yet barks if anyone comes on property... even wife or myself.

If I had room for another pet, I would get another one. (Have 2 dogs, 3 cats and a bird of prey).

Thanks Griffoneur, I kinda figured you would be the first to reply to my query. Not many breeders of these dogs around. Que, Alberta, BC. N Dakota. Whatever the final outcome, it will no doubt be sleeping in my bed. Never had one that didn't. lol

Have a look at the Drahthaar... www.vdd-canada.ca/public/index.htm

It's 'puppy season' to! Lucky you! http://www.vdd-canada.ca/public/the-breeding-system-litter-announcements.htm

Do a little research on Versatile hunting dogs. The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association is one group that sponsors standardized hunting tests for these dogs, and the Versatile Hunting Dog Federation is another. Versatile dogs, which include the Griffon, are expected to point upland birds, track and retrieve on both land and water, and most breeds are also good for hunting furred game. Griffons are good dogs and if from a good breeder you will be happy. But after a little research some other breeds might fit your criteria as well. The test scores of sire and dam and their line are the only objective way to measure your likelihood of getting a pup that will develop into a good versatile hunting dog. I would personally stay away from any dogs that have been entered into the beauty contests sponsored by the CKC and AKC.

Ya thanks Longwalker. Not interested in the "beauty" type dogs. Really only want a good versatile hunting dog that can be my best friend and constant companion. These "Drahthaar's" look almost the same as the Griffons to my untrained eye, and I see there is a breeder reasonably close to me. Might have to have a look at these. Nos looks pretty cool there Jay.
