I am cross dominant, right handed but my left eye is the boss. I have to shoot with my left eye closed or the whole rib of the shotgun doesn't line up for me. Surprisingly if I hold the gun left handed and open both eyes I can't get a good fit either. There is a very famous woman trap shooter who has shot with one eye closed her entire career, so I am not too worried about it. While hunting I seem to hit birds good enough as well.
I have always been a right handed shooter who was right eye dominant but in the past couple years my left eye has become my stronger close vision eye and is taking over while shooting. If I try to shoot left handed with both eyes open all I see is the entire right side of the gun and the rib looks inches away to my left. Put the gun to my right shoulder and all is well at first but as soon as I look over the trap house to focus out front for an emerging target my gun completely disappears from view. I went to an optician in Edmonton who specializes with shooters. He had me bring my gun, checked the fit, eye alignment and a few other routine tests and determined I have a cross eye dominance issue occurring. He put a dot on my glasses, ran a few checks then explained the proper way to install a new dot on my glasses as the one he had was too small. The past two years have been full of frustrations to say the least however there has been some improvement since visiting him. I think however I am going to be trying shooting with one eye closed this season as I still have times when it seems the left eye can see through or past that dot on the left lens. I haven't shot one eye closed since I was 15 and trained myself to shoot both eyes open but I am sure just as I did then I can make the adjustment. Since our club is closed in winter I have been practicing mounting my gun each day at home with one eye closed and it is starting to feel and look natural so that by spring I should be comfortable by the time I get on the field to shoot. It's also giving me a good feel for my new gun.
