Was at LeBaron last week for some Win 7.62x39 SP ammo... no rounds. Can't get 'em, haven't been able to for a year they said. Called the range today for some Federal loads, same story, except feller told me the US is not issuing export permits for the ammo. All I found in town was some Czech made stuff from Sellier & Bellot... not sure how much I should trust it.

So.. why is the Winchester and Federal ammo being kept in the US?

The Internet rumours abound.

One rumour: The UN is taking control of the stuff.
Another rumour: The US is hoarding it for their surrogate armies.
Another rumour: So many Canadians are buying SKS's that milsurp sources can't keep up.

I'm waiting for Marstar to ship my first SKS and my source is waiting for a delivery, too.

Things Miltary and Districorp have 7.62x39mm brass cased reloadable SP ammo in stock. It is made by Igman and works quite well. I think it is 11.24 for a box of 20 rounds. Districorp will be closer to you, their web address is w ww.districorp.ca

Wholesale Sports in Calgary has Federal blue box 123sp 7.62x39 and it is good ammo. I've shot two deer with it this fall and I got a 1.8" 5 shoot group at 200m with it when I was sighting it in. The rifle was a Ruger M77 mkII.

My gunsmith had no brass to sell me, and said the USA was holding it back.
Yet other dealers seem to not have problems.

What some hunters are doing...
Remove and set aside the FMJ bullets with a Bullet puller.
Buy a box of soft point bullets of the right dia, and weight.
Reloading dies to press the bullets in the milsurp case.

Hunt away, and clean rifle well afterwards.
I haven't tried this yet myself, so I expect there will be bugs to work out.
