Well, I'd still like to put a mark there as I like to swap barrels and I'd like to be certain the barrel is lined up, without having to use gauges to check headspace again. Although I hear what you say about the headspace not changing no matter what the torque.
Simply tighten the barrel by hand, then torque it tight to about 125 foot pounds. Repeat any time you swap barrels. It will be lined up as well as any witness mark.
If you must use a witness mark a sharp flat punch will mark the barrel or the receiver but not at the same time. You need to stamp the receiver first... tighten the barrel and scratch a small mark where you will stamp it when you remove it...
It's a pain and I stopped doing it 35 years or more ago.
Thepitchedlink I love 'witness mark' and use them all the time for various reasons. Yes they are a bit old school, but if you want to use them why not, you will do no harm. I actually make a tool up to put them on, so both mark are struck at the same time, but a sharp cold chisel works just fine to.
I from time to time have found witness marks of great value when trouble shooting a problem gun. Just unbreaching a barrel and re indexing it (sometimes more- sometimes less) has improved the accuracy on more than just a few guns, on the other hand, I've never seemed to have one turn out worse. Your choice, only takes 2 seconds.
