Does anyone have experience with installing a mid length gas barrel on these platforms?

I want to use a 18.6” barrel with mid gas for a 180, is it worth doing? The barrel I have is far superior (IBI) and it’s also a bit lighter with fluting.

Do I just need a new rod and spring? Who makes these?

Thanks

You just need the longer op rod, to my knowledge, as the recoil springs are inside the receiver.

True North Arms is about to release mid and rifle length op rods. RWA used to make them, not sure if they still do.

If you're system is undergassed, you may need to have the gas port drilled wider. You can then dial the gas back with an adjustable gas block from TNA.

One more firearm you may want to consider is the Jard J180, which had shipped to Canada, but not yet arrived. It uses direct gas impingement against a 180 recoil system, so it uses a standard AR gas tube instead of a piston.

SBI is working in a DI 180 upper as well, but their ETA is early fall optimistically.

Third Echelon has high quality mid length op rods.

I'm in the process of building a rifle with this, but also in the process of having an 11mo and trying to move house, so it's going slow... 3E were easy to deal with and quick to ship. I'm waiting on a dimpling jog for my barrel and a spare op rod spring so I dont have to disassemble my current upper.

Nice! Can I ask what barrel you went with? Did the gas port need to be enlarged?

A ballistic advantage. As I said - it's in process so no shooty yet. Probably be a fall/winter thing given we just got our offer accepted. Going to be painting and fixing up our current place before I get to shoot the new rifle.

Probably will need some gas port size fiddling. Barrel is shorter AND longer gas system.

Apologies for bringing this back from the dead. I assume that the original piston spring will work with the midlength piston rod because the piston rod is longer on the muzzle end, right?

I put a mid length AR barrel on and the gas port needed no mods to cycle the bolt. The same piston spring is used, you’re right that the added length in on the muzzle end.

The difference between the carbine and mid length is very noticeable. The recoil is much softer than factory but doesn’t feel too soft that there might be cycling issues if the gun is too dirty.

I recommend third echelon for a mid length rod and barrel. Ended up keeping my IBI for another project.
Very happy with the price and the results yielded from the third echelon offerings.
