Range Report:

Put another 100 rounds of 55gr surplus 5.56 through it as well as 40 rounds of 75gr Hornady Match bringing the total to 250 rounds or so.

Still absolutely no malfunctions of any sort. Gun runs flawless thus far.

My best group with the 75gr match was 0.87" while most were between 1-2"

Im not the best shot to begin with and pairing that with the absolutely awful ergonomics of the A2 grip and stock, the arguably sh*t trigger that comes stock and my lack of a rear bag to shoot off of didn't help the rifle much.

I expect these groups to tighten up a bit with some upgrades and more trigger time but I was overall fairly impressed for a piston gun.

Should settle into that 1-1.5" range which is perfect for a duty type rifle with factory ammo and potentially sub moa with hand loads and a match barrel.

I DO have a a couple of gripes however.

The gas block being non adjustable means the rifle is still way over-gassed which has me worried about premature wear and the longevity of parts, though no signs yet.

The castle nut is loose and so were the gas block screws after 100 rounds. While not a big deal in the grand scheme, it speaks to the absolute lack of QC evidently still present within Kodiak and worries me slightly. How damn hard is it to stake a castle nut and properly thread lock and torque a gas block? I have a sub 20 serial so its not like these are just missed because of mass production. It was one of the first made.

Little sh*t like that is what really pisses me off when paying $1600-1700 after tax for a rifle.

Such is living in Communist Canada I suppose.

Will report back with round count as it rises and subsequent gripes/malfunctions should they present themselves.

UPDATE: Round Count : 400 No Malfunctions.

UPDATE: Round Count : 550 No Malfunctions (cross mags tested)

UPDATE: Round Count : 700 No Malfunctions

Thanks for the review. I was considering one of these but the new price with old problems make it an easy pass. My first gen made several trips back to Kodiak. Most unreliable gun I've owned to this point

I've owned and shot over 20 different AR15 and AR15 configurations over 30 years , I have never had a castle nut come loose or had to ever stake one.

As far as gas block screws coming loose after 100 rounds that is really really sad to hear

Thanks for the update OP and really appreciate the honesty

I was a very unhappy customer with the first gen WK180s years ago ( they stung me once) still on the fence for the Gen 2

Did it look like the clip they added to keep the gas block in alignment was still keeping everything aligned with the gas block screws loose? If that works, hopefully the clip will prevent the snapping of pistons from occurring that happened to often on the Gen 1; it's not good to see the fasteners loose, but hopefully they may have improved the overall fault tolerance.

I don't get it. When KD first started making these things the gas block was pinned in place. Then they went with set screws which didn't work out so well. Now they are using set screws and some sort of clip?

Seriously, I don't get what's going on??? Why don't they just pin the damn things on and be done with it???

Can't confirm for sure but the gas block didnt move out of alignment even with the gas block screws fairly loose so that gives me a bit of hope with the new design

Staking is always a good idea, most quality AR15s come with the castle nut staked. That said, its extra insurance and shouldn't be necessary if you torque the castle nut properly in the first place.

certainly not looking top tier when you can't get the basics, that have been known for decades what work and what doesn't, done right.

I have a very early 1st gen rifle and my gas block was not pinned in place it still used the set screw

Serial number a bit above 100. 1 set screw at the rear of the gas block and a pin through the front. It is not a taper pin like on an AR-15 fsb. This pin can be driven out to easily remove gas block but it fits tight and most importantly prevents the gas block from coming out of alignment. Quite a few rounds through this rifle and the gas block hasn't gone anywhere. Really not sure why they quit doing this???

Also I'd be interested in seeing what their new "retaining clip" method looks like if anyone can share a picture.

Was honestly hoping to see a bit more design improvement to the gas/piston system in the Gen 2 but so far it looks like the only improvements to the rifle are ergonomics/aesthetics?

Thanks for the report. I was hoping for adjustable gas on this one, plus better QC.

Guess I'll spend way more money and buy an R-18
