WK181 5000 Round Initial Review

Wow this is some serious care and attention to detail. Thanks for the review on this one!

Thanks Jukes we're hoping to start testing tomorrow providing the replacement firing pin comes in.

Fortunately the BCL accepts 10 round mags so half as many reloads haha

The WK180 Gen 1 can also be found in 7.62x39, however many suffer reliability issues due to the use of STANAG magazines with a calibre they just were not designed around and the subsequent feed angle issues it had along with the feed ramps used with the WK180 at the time.

The WK181 has a completely different gas system, a slightly different bolt carrier and a different lower receiver than the WK180 Gen 2

The gas system reduces the overall piston length by having a gas block more similar to the original AR180 and a longer gas cylinder/cup. This also removes the need for tools to take apart the gas system itself however now you must remove the handguard in order to gain access to it. In addition the brass bushing is now standard

The carrier basically is the same as the 180 gen 2 but with a cut out to make space for the new piston.

The lower receiver is now cut out to accept AK mags, which seems to have resolved the feeding issues almost entirely and the retaining pins now both come out the same side which is nice.

The springs though remain the same as the WK180 556 rifle springs, we really think it would be better if stronger springs could be used and if the bolt could be larger and seal against dirt coming through the firing port better

The review may take some time to produce, we're not filthy rich and it will take some time to get enough ammo, that's something we've emailed the CGN admins about though (don't want to break rules asking for things where we shouldn't)

We can't tell you what to buy because how could we possibly know what you want it for if you don't tell us.

At 5k we're comfortable giving an initial review but that's it. Proper testing, proper results, proper advice

I buy expensive things and expect them to work. Looking through your testing, it seems to have had a fair amount of failures almost immediately.

My previous comment was basically me just being tongue and cheek and stating that no one should buy it...

Great write up by the way, seemed like a lot of effort. GG.

It certainly did have some whoopsies at the beginning that could have been resolved by for example pre-tightening the handguard screws more and checking the feeding of the magazines, but by en-large it's not been a disaster, how will it compare against others? Time will tell we just need help doing the testing
 
Thats intresting, i will probably pickup a spare set of springs for mine and put some locktight on problem screws.
Mine also had a few click no bangs,( lite/no primer strike) in the first 100 rounds, but it seems to have resolved.
 
Nice to see them makings changes to the gas system. Hopefully this makes it's way over to the 5.56 gun.

As for the recoil springs being weak, that's the impression I get with these guns (the Canadian made 180s in general) in comparison to other guns. I wonder if someone could offer a direct comparison between these and the original 180 (paging Bartok).

I would love to see a review and test of the WK180 in 556 gen 2.

Most people including me thought the problems of gen 1 are solved but I just read some reviews on cabelas web site and it seems that the gen 2 is almost as bad as gen 1.

True?
