I have been looking at this scope for my 45-70 which is built on a martini shotgun action, however before I put out the money I would like to get some of the good old boy's opinions. Has anyone out there used this scope and if so were you happy with it or did it have flaws. Sure would be interested to here from you.

Malcolm was a maker of the orig. scopes in the 1800s, and I think all the current ones are repros.....from MVA to RHO to Leatherwood, which one are you interested in?
 
There is one big drawback to the long scopes with outside mounts and particularly with black powder cartridges. The outside mounts limit the amount of vertical adjustment you can make and that is particularly true of long scopes and further exasperated by the rainbow trajectory of slow heavy bullets.

I have a long sight on a 40-70 rolling block and I doubt that I could raise it much farther than about 250 yards. Also the mounts on my sight more or less mean that I have to resight the gun laterally if I change the range that I am sighted for.

Hello Moon coon

The scope I am looking at is the leatherwood long and is supposed to be good for 1000 yards? At least that is what is says at this site. Sure be glad to know if there is something wrong with this picture.

I had one on a long range muzzleloader the scope was so so and the mounts were crap if you are going to get the scope I would pass on the mounts and order up a set from Parts Unknown He is located in Winnipeg he also make excellent soule sights R.H.O and MVA make higher quallity scopes ,but they are limited to the longer barrels

If you plan on ordering in from the US, you should know about the USA export ban on rifle scopes. I tried to get one from buffalo arms... no go.
Does any one in Canada stock them? Or maybe from Italy?
 
The one in the add has better mounts than mine. The rear mount in particular is not off set and adjusts much like a tang sight. Having said that, think about the length of tang sights used for long range BP shooting; they need to have about 1" or more of adjustment and so will that scope. For 1000 yards, I will have to measure one of my rifles but I am guessing close to 2" of adjustment. The problem is not in the optics, it is in the mounts and in the ability to quickly and repeatably adjust the scope for variable ranges.

Actually the scope itself is quite a good set of optics and I have had no problems with Mine for hunting and target shooting. Their mounts truly are crap and after talking to Parts Unknown at the Quigley Shoot this year he said he does not make them and has no intention to do so in the future. My scope was sent to me directly from Buffalo Arms in the States 3 years ago, so I do not know what their problem would be now. With some modifications you can get their mounts to work. There is plenty of room for elevation on their mounts for long range.
 
If someone here actually finds one that will ship from the US, please let me know. The export law is new, so old info is no good. Apparently a business down there can get a licence to export them to Canada, but I haven't had luck finding one yet.

The American Govt. has a real ban on things to do with firearms. Scopes are not allowed to come North to Canada, who knows what they are thinking. To you and all the others who responded to my mail, thank you very much. It appears the only way to get a scope from the states is to have it mailed to a friend or relative living down there and then bring it through yourself or perhaps have it gifted to you. Who knows! Maybe not selling scopes to Canadians will make the world safe for the bushtail.
 
Little Pete....RHO Inst. make nice looking Malcolm scopes and mounts and are not far from BC....(Point Roberts, Wash.).....$850.00 complete w/mounts....alot more then the tascos i have!!!!........Ben

That's right.
That's why I had Shiloh install blocks for a 23" MVA scope.
The shorter the scope the further you can shoot.
This 23" scope setup will allow me to shoot 1000 yards easily.
It will be going on my brand new 45-110 at the bottom of the pics.
