This will be my first hunting season in Alberta as I got posted here with the military this summer. I have been drawn for an antlered whitetail tag in WMU 408 and would appreciate any tips I can get.

I have been in touch over the phone with two land owners but neither are hunters. I will be hunting during the last week of November.

Thanks

Lives in Wainwright and goes to 408 for whitetail... should be the other way around. Not saying there are not any WT in 408 but give the choice I'd sooner hunt them up near Wainwright where they are much more common.

Some good whitetails around Boundary stables and across from the Golf Course. Lots of deer near Fortress gas station as well. Pretty well all public land in 408 but lots of parks, rec areas, rec leases, etc. It's easy to end up in area where hunting is not permitted. Contact the Canmore F&W office and get a copy of the Friends of Kananaskis map....it details all the off limit areas. Make sure you know where you are at all times....many boundaries aren't obvious nor marked. Good luck and with a little persistence you should be able to find a good buck.

I know it doesn't make any sense, I got my WIN card and applied on the draws the last day before they ended when I was still in Ontario. My posting here was a last minute thing and I'll be the first to admit I didn't really know what I was doing when I applied on draws using the REALM online system.

Once I figured out my mistake, I figured I could just get a general whitetail tag and not hunt the tag I got drawn for in WMU 408. I just wanted to hunt in the community pasture outside Wainwright but I can't get a general tag since I have been drawn for one.

In fact you used to be able to not my the drawn tag and jut buy the general. There was also a time when the WT draws were for an authorization not a special license, this was nice because you could hunt anywhere general was good as well as the zone that you were drawn for. Well it is beautiful in 408 so enjoy, just watch out for all the part and rec areas.

Life gives you a lemon, make lemonade. :) No doubt some Whitetails there. Good news is the tourists will be gone when you go to hunt.
