I'm going wolf hunting this weekend. Have the fox pro ready, rifle, white coveralls.

Anyone have any advice or pointers of things to keep in mind to increase my chances of success?

The wolf population around here has exploded and they are in the area.

Throw out some kind of scent attractant and put as much range between you and your prey that will be a comfortable shot. Those animals are SMART and do not usually just hang around waiting to be shot. I missed one last year because I just was not ready (will not happen again:rolleyes:). We have lots in our area and I am on the lookout everyday, but it may be a while till I get another chance.
GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN:):):)
Pete......

Here is a tip I got from an old native fellow.

If you have the time to identify which is the alpha male or pack leader try and shoot this one first. Due to their rigid hierarchy the other animals will refrain from leaving if the pack leader does not. So if the alpha male is down and not running away the other will mill about presenting the opportunity for more shots. Eventually the instinct to escape evident danger will overcome the desire to follow the pack leader but that may take some time.2

This old guy once got 5 out of a pack of 7 with a 22 magnum using this method. Never tried it myself but it makes sense

Hi, I just joined today but your post jumped out at me... I love hunting wolves. my friends and I have shot and trapped lots of them. I've called and shot a few with prey in distress sounds, but howling has always worked better for me. Find fresh tracks, spend the time to set up well...watch the wind. Start to howl and Be ready cause wolves are top dog and run in lots of times. If you shoot one, don't quit right away. keep howling...more show up sometimes. good luck!!!

They have the ability to make even experienced hunters nervous... A few years ago I missed the first one I ever shot at, then last year I got into a pack of 5 and missed them all! ( don't ask!)
I found out that rushing my shots was not a good idea.
This fall it all came together and the result was sweet! Hunting with a single shot does help the shooter to concentrate on the important stuff...

an old fella once told me that the trick to calling game, any game,is to be within 50 miles of it. :D
of course he was exaggerating but the principle is sound. If they are not in the immediate area they can't come to the call...
The big W is a crafty critter!

Go to an area with suspected wolf activity (tracks...####..piss) around 9 or 10 at night and start the howling. If you get nothing within 15-20 minutes then try somewhere else.

If you get replies then it would be a good spot to setup early the next day or late afternoon...at least this is the strategy im using .
