Just wondering if anyone here can positively identify these. If a Wolf, it is an Eastern Wolf (a.k.a. Algonquin wolf) which closely resembles Coyotes. That's all we have around here. Thanks.

Central Ontario, not far from Algonquin Park.

You are right. Eastern Wolves are genetically identical to the Red Wolves south of the border. They are smaller than the Gray Wolves and both might be related to Coyotes, which makes their identification very difficult. But they are still considered Wolves.

Looks like those pointy type coyote ears and nose. Hard to judge size and scale in the pictures. If this dog is really big then I'm guessing maybe wolf but I admit I don't really know my wolves, only seen one in the wild and I remember it to be very tallish looking and strikingly very big. This dog however looks like it's just big, like the typical type of coyote we see and call around here (Hamilton region) and points north of here up to Georgian Bay. We also see the smaller versions, maybe younger ones, so it's not as though they are all big but the bigger dogs do show themselves

coyote
standard tail angle to go buy when the animal is walking around
- 45deg. and lower- a yote ,
45 deg. and higher -wolf ,
now there are certainly other factors but its pretty safe money on those. good size though

Coyote was my first thought too. But see the following:

From http://www.sbaa.ca/projects.asp?cn=314

...."Eastern Wolves (and therefore Red Wolves) are very small in size compared to the Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) living in the boreal forest north of Lake Superior in Ontario. Most people lucky enough to catch a quick glimpse of an Eastern Wolf in the wild for the first time are surprised by the animal's small size (only about 60 to 68 centimetres at the shoulder). People from more southern areas dominated by agriculture often believe that they have seen a Coyote (Canis latrans) in Algonquin Park. Coyotes are generally absent from Algonquin Park, since wolves will regularly kill any trespasser into their territory and Coyotes have a difficult time finding food in completely forested environments..."
