I have a question regarding wolf ammo. I was interested in buying some but I ended up buying centaurs reload instead.

A guy at the range today was shooting wolf and his bullets were tumbling. The we're hitting sideways @ 10 yards. The guy did not seem to understand what was happening. I only saw the target ounce he was packing he was shooting from a striker fire pistol.

I asked questions but he seemed to be in a hurry to leave. He said that it was acceptable for plinking (wtf).

Now I know it can't be a common occurrence because they would not stay in business. But what can cause bullet tumbling in that case?? Only thing that come to mind is a very dirty/worn out barrel? Or they got a bad batch of ammo??

Is it possible he was shooting .357 Sig in a .40 S&W handgun? They will chamber in some handguns but the bullet is far too small to engage the rifling and will tumble. I have also heard of people shooting 9mm in 40 S&W's which would have a similar effect and also be potentially dangerous.

Tumbling can be caused by:
-standard sized bullet in a grossly oversized/worn out bore
-grossly undersized bullet in a standard bore
-somewhat undersized bullet in a somewhat oversized/worn out bore
-velocity much too low for the barrel/bullet combination (exceptionally low, if it was a semi and it was still cycling I can't see this being the cause)
-bullet much too heavy (which reduces velocity, causing the tumbling)
-otherwise damaged or messed up barrel or horribly damaged crown

Essentially there is no way to tell if it was the ammo, gun, or a combination of the two without inspecting both. There was obviously something wrong and the guy shrugging it off and saying it's acceptable for plinking means I wouldn't shoot near him in the future. If he'll shrug that off, how potentially dangerous to himself and those close enough to be in the blast radius is he?

Maybe, but I will most likely never know. Looks like the type of guy who go shooting ounce a year just to keep the qc cfo off their back. He was in/out of the range in 5 mins.
