Today I decided to cast some TC Maxi-Ball. I drained my pot and added a hodgepodge of Maxi-Ball and Maxi-Hunters I had, a box of round ball I never get around to shooting and some clean soft lead.
Well, did that mix ever smoke. Thick black smoke for over a 1/2 hour. Smoke was visibly being exhausted out my exterior vent and was wafting across the back yard. The Bore Butter from the Maxis refused to burn off and had left what looked like a black oil slick floating on top of the molten alloy. I finally got frustrated with it and skimmed off the oil slick stuff. The smoke calmed down after that.
Once the stuff I skimmed off cooled down it turned into something black and really hard? Almost like a plastic? Carburized what?
Guess I should have burnt/melted the lube off the Maxis with a propane torch outside before attempting to melt them?
