I have an old gun that has crack on the centre of the pistol grip. I have bought some brass pins from a local gun shop and I need help installing the pin. Do I drill through the stock or half way; And do I drill a pilot hole first; any help would be appreciated . Thanks John.

Hey there Foozball it would help if you posted some pictures of your crack( gun stock). So as we could see and give you better answer on what to do. How long are your pins type of wood. May be just some epoxy glue would do the trick. Are there missing pieces? Is it loose?

The pins themselves need a pilot hole drilled. I try not to drill all the way through the stock, then cut the pin shorter than the drilled hole.

The crack itself needs repaired, but not by the pins. The pins should be used as reinforcement.

'Why' the stock cracked needs to be determined prior to repair work. On bolt action rifles it is common to find damage to the recoil lug portion of the stock that was the precursor to the cracked pistol grip.

Check where the recoil lugs bear on the wood. If the wood is "crushed" and not perfectly square it can be fixed up fairly easily. Just square it off and rebed with something like Agraglass gel.

See this often in LEs that have been stored barrel up. Oil gets into the wood and softens it. As Lodi suggests, drill a pilot hole same diameter as pin. Take your brass pin, chuck it into a drill and use 100 grid sand paper to give it a good bite. Coat it with Agraglass (or some other epoxy) and tap it in.
