How is a wood stock compared to a composite stock, lighter or heavier? Or does it depend?

If your talking about USGI stocks, then I personally found the fiberglass stock to be just a tad bit lighter (not really that much) than the wood. As far as I know, the US military tried to keep the fiberglass stock at an almost the same weight as the original wooden stock, its just that the fiberglass one is easier to handle by soldiers with smaller hands.
Average weights
Usgi fiberglass unmodified, with issue buttplate = 2lbs 14oz
Chinese wood stock with issue buttplate = 2lbs 11oz
Usgi walnut with issue buttplate 2LBS 10oz
Boyd's walnut with buttplate 2lbs 12oz
In every case I've measured, the wood is lighter. But all the weight in a glass stock is in the rear 1/2 so it balances better and "feels" lighter.
On the other side, we are only talking a few oz spread between them all.

I'm curious if anyone has built a rifle with weight savings in mind. Something like a wood stock with rubber butt plate and tools removed? Does it make the rifle to barrel heavy? Removing the butt plate and tools would give you a good idea of what the balance would be I guess. I'm swapping out teh metal butt plate as I find it uncomfortable to shoot with. I'm hoping the rubber is better, if not maybe no butt plate and a limb saver butt pad.
A company that makes this rifle also makes a version that is the lightest stock on the market but if you mention it's name the rumor is your account will get banned.
I've handled that stock at a clinic...really felt sweet!
No money to buy it then, nor now...but maybe in future!

I am buying a USGI stock to use on my M305 Shorty. It looks like it will be a little bit lighter than the Norinco stock which is a good thing. Is it possible to fit a rubber butt pad to the USGI and delete all the metal in the butt of the stock? I don't really need the storage.

That, and I think the "rubber butt pad" will be many ounces lighter than the steel buttplate too, so more weight savings.
However, the "rubber butt pad" is not really rubbery at all...it's closer to a hard plastic, so don't expect to have recoil absorption with it. Also, it increases the length of the stock, the "pull of the stock", by...er...actually I'm not sure, maybe half an inch? Many larger guys would see this as a benefit...to me, not so much.
That said, it's an inexpensive part for you to try out, see if you like it or not. I think I paid $15 at a show...you might find someone with a cheaper price.
