As the title says,
I've been looking at the OCEAN of pot calls out there. Don't have time to wait for a custom pot call to be made since opening day is right around the corner. This woodhaven call costs $100, but it got great reviews on Bass Pro and Cabela's. Is this call really worth it, or is the price tag just a marketing ploy? Any personal experiences with this one?

I have a Woodhaven box call, very nice, no complaints. Nice sound, lots of volume.
But I don't think it brings in more turkeys...
A little overpriced but it's something nice that should hold up.

Yeah, I have the Woodhaven Real Hen Cherry box. It's really nice.
I ended up ordering a David Halloran Wenge and Walnut Laminate Slate Call with a Halloran Ipe striker from MidWest Turkey Call . Should be a good combination.
What pot calls are you using this season?

I have pot calls I paid $10-12, made one from some scrap hardwood, glass and roofing slate many moons ago, also pots and others I paid a great deal more than $100. Depending on the day they all will work.
Like all hunting there is no magic potion or call that will bring every turkey every time, I have a box full of calls that have been retired or replaced. If this is the hunt you want go back to watching videos. Practice and being able to judge a bird's mood and how little or much calling they want, on any given day, is what you want to focus on. Educate them a time or two or better yet hunt them after someone else has and you will find out how difficult turkey hunting can be. Then again when the mood strikes they will run across 500yds of open field, at full strut, to come hammer a decoy. 20 years of chasing these birds I have seen some pretty difficult or easy birds depending on the day.

Brings back a memory of hunting the May 24 Monday, Quick afternoon hunt working 3 birds, across a field the farmer working ground had spooked, They were coming but slow, next thing I see them run for the decoys, placed 3 yds in front of me, what I didn't see was the other 4 mature toms coming up the field edge. Next thing I know I have 7 toms in the decoys, which were taking a thumping, Wheat is up about 12-18" couldn't see beards or spurs, which one is the biggest????. Me thinks shoot the one with the biggest snod. Once he separated a bit down goes a 22 lber and I got to watch his 6 buddies come back 4 times to stomp him.

That folks is what keeps me coming back.

Thanks for sharing a great story. Definitely a motivational story for novices such as myself. 5 days to go. Saw 15 hens and 5 big toms 175 yards away out on the field about a week ago. went back 4 days later at 4:30 am until 8:00am. Couldn't hear a peep.
Can't wait for the 25th, opening day!
