Buying my first 10/22 soon. I'll be using it for plinking as opposed to precision shooting.

Won't be upgrading stock or barrel, just trigger components. So the question is will synthetic be that much more accurate than the hardwood stock? Will the weather affect it much? I prefer the look/feel of the wood.

I think that comes down to preference...wood wearing guns allways feel better to me,and i own several wearing both materials

Here are some things to think about...

Wood...

- Most poeple agree that they look nicer
- Easier to Glass bed

- Get scratched more easily, and dented
- Change shape in Humidity

Synthetic

- Very durable and don't mark as easily
- Don't change as much in humidy, resulting in less change in POI

- They don't look as nice
- They are very light (good or bad?)

Just some things to think about

If you ar enot precision shooting... I don't beleive there is a factory made 10/22 out there that won't be accurate enough for plinking. Doesn't matter. I have owned a few 10/22s and have never had an accuracy issue.

go with the wood, no worries.
If you will ever want to upgrade, the stock will be the first to go.... be it wood or synthetic. The only real drawback of wood is that if you go hunting... you'll scratch it and (unlike the synthetic one) will not look "like new", but you can always sand and tru-oil it....

Let me encourage you a bit: wood is nicer in hot weather. Try putting you cheek on a plastic one after being in the sun for 20 min.
wood is nicer to grip... in same hot weather.. most plastics go limb....
it doesn't make that nasty sound when you touch the stock with something...

Some synthetic stocks mark like crazy! They can look all beat up even if it's not something you can feel.

Good choice with the wood, Ducimus. Synthetic can be nice, but on cheaper guns it's more like tupperware.

I am VERY unhappy with synthetic stock on my Savage 64. Stock is flexing in all directions and light - both are bad things. As said above, synthetic stock feels cheap, like a toy from toys r us. On top of that it hasn't been casted true and action did not sit right on it. Say it was nothing short of a disaster.

I am VERY unhappy with synthetic stock on my Savage 64.

I had Savages synthetic stock on my .223. It was gone straight away. Choate love it or hate it it's heavy and rock solid.

Laminate seem like it might be a good choice.

My Savage 93 in 17Hmr is synthetic and I like it. Only thing I did not like was that the trigger guard is synthetic as well.

FWIW he decided to buy wood already....:p

I have a Savage as well. It is not the same plastic as Ruger's.
I had to take off the buttplate... fill it with insulating foam.... and still sounded like I was a drummer, dot a shooter everytime I touched the stock.... Hard to bed... and there are more, but these should be enough.
For the "out of the box" rifle, wood is better. :)

My model 70 (30-06) is synthetic, sold theoriginal stock, made the gun ALOT lighter in the field and I am happy with it.
My 10/22 is synthetic, as accurate as any factory .22, also very light and has a nice feel to the stock, happy with it.
Just bought a Stevens 200 (only available in grey synthetic) so far I am quite happy with it.
My Tikka T3 (22-250) lite is synthetic and of course "lite" shoots sub MOA, very accurate.
My win 94 is wood... but come one, who would put plastic on a 94? ( I have seen 2 actually, kinda funny looking)
My Browning Gold is wood and I use it mainly for ducks and Geese, I sure wish it was synthetic, got it home one day to see the wood swelled out about 1/4" passed the recoil pad. It has bee wet alot.
The rest of my guns are wood and I like both.
Depending on the gun wood is nicer, but I really prefer the synthetic on the 10/22s especially the scalloped stocks, very nice.

my eyes !!!!!
they told me not to do it .... Moderators...... please remove... this is against forum/esthetics/humanity/common sense.....

Ughhhh. It goes right next to R1 - Darth Vader rifle.....

When composite stocks first came out i got a set for my 870. it sucked it felt like wearing a condom. I recently bought a Beretta Urika with the new plastic, the feel is much better but it is just a hunting gun. I don't have the same pride in this gun. Matt black or camo may work better in the goose pit or duck blind, but I don't have the feeling for the gun as a nice rich shiny blued metal and a nice piece of walnut. It's not the same.

Walnut all the way on blued, Lam on stainless.
