I purchased this off of the family of a late gunsmith. He went by the name of "WayneSK" (RIP) on CGN I think. I bought this No4 action he was working on and never had a chance to complete. Here are some pics of some of the work he did. I am planning on completing this build and using it for a target rifle. here is some pics of some of his work.

What's the mag well filled with?

What's the dovetail rail under the forestock for?

Bolt head looks fancy too...

Oh, my!

The man knew what he was doing, that's certain.

Hew was building a Number 4 action into a SERIOUS match rifle. Notice the official Canadian "SALE" marking and the CAL rollmark.

Plugging off the mag well and welding in a permanent insert stiffens the action so that it better tolerates the twisting from the higher-pressure 7.62 NATO loads. It also allows you to use a solid-bottom stock which gives greater rigidity to the wood and less problems in bedding the thing. Open rail under the barrel is for an adjustable sling, can also be used for weights for offhand shooting.

You see, I know HOW to do all these things and WHY to do them, I just DON'T do them!

This would be an awful monster to carry around, but I'm not gonna stand in front of it and stick my tongue out at half a mile, either!

Complete his work, friend, and you will have one FORMIDABLE range rifle.

What year is the action?
.

The action is a 44. Im planning on setting it up for a 308 target. If I cant then ill use it for 7.62 nato. Im going to take it to epps and get the barrel torqued and extractor cut. Im going to get a straight comb stock as well.

DCRA conversion No.5 too I see. Opened up for a Canjar or some other aftermarket trigger obviously. Typical 70s range rifle.

Make sure you use a LB bolt head with the bevelled guide lip ends or you'll risk knocking the edges of the bolt head release slot around even more than they are already.

Yes, I shot with Wayne in Saskatchewan. He knew his stuff. His cancer killed him quickly, although nothing was nice about it.

This is deffintly a heavy rifle. The way it sits now it is 8 pounds. Cant wait to get it finished. Would it be better to get it D&T for a scope mount or get S&K type mount? Also is it better to free float the barrel or get it bedded the full length?

Looks as if you have enough there, so I would S&K it. Be a tad iffy getting it on and off but you could trim an Allen wrench to do the job.

If it were mine, I would float the barrel.
.

Okay so I priced everything out so far.
CanWest trigger is $140+tax
Barrel torqued $60-$75
Extractor cut $60-$75
Then having a stock made will be ????
I dont think that will be to bad for a rifle like this. I like this rifle so it will be worth it.
