What is situation in New York State regarding purchasing and possession of handguns, rifles, ammo, reloading components like powder, primers, loaded ammo, etc? What is a legal status of a Canadian working over there? Any permit required?

Looks like that I might get an offer to work in Albany area. Nothing definite yet, but before heading south I would like to know what to expect.

Any info or advice welcome and greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Onty.

You're screwed legally.

NY is one of the worst states. Not to mention the whole illegal for aliens (thats you) to be in posession of ANY firearms related material. UNLESS you have proper authorisation. At a minimum a state hunting licence is required to even be legally in posession of ammo or components.

"...in New York State..." It's not just N.Y. State law, you must comply with U.S. Federal law as well. Non-immigrant aliens cannot possess anything firearm related. Moving there permanently is different. Then you get to comply with Federal and State law plus, in some cases, municipal laws. NYC for example. Plus some firearms cannot be imported into the States. Norinco's and any Lend/Lease firearms for example. So if you have an M305 or M-1, you can't take them with you.
Have a look here for a synopsis of NYS laws. http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/StateLaws.aspx?ST=NY

Thanks folks. I am not sure what kind of legal status I am going to have at the first moment. As for firearms, I don’t have intention of taking anything there. Too much hassle and why to bother, selection is far better in US anyhow. My intention is just to by some revolvers with one or two semiautos like 1911 or/and S&W 1006 or 4506. Should know complete story by the end of next week. Too bad that potential employer isn’t located in Vermont…
