Worried about my .45-70

It's always been my thinking that a slug that you are shooting out of a certain gun should not be able to fit past the ogive into the bore of said gun when dropped in through the muzzle end as such:

but when i try this on my Marlin 45-70 which is quite new, the slug fits LOOSLEY down inside right up to the casing!

Now, seen as how it shoots quite well, I'm sure there is an explanation for this, anybody know it?

Yes, the ogive of the bullet comes all the way down to the cannelure, so the bullet goes all the way into the muzzle.

Trying the fit of the bullet in a cartridge into the muzzle is not a reliable way to check for bore wear for this very reason.

Ted's right. Pull a bullet and drop it in. If it falls through you have a problem, but I don't think it will.

If you're real concerned...tap a fat soft cast bullet in a ways and then tap it out from the breach with some dowling and measure the slug.

Concur ... if it still shoots well, leave it alone and be happy !

measure the diameter of the bullet at the case mouth... It looks like its crimped in a reduced diameter portion of the bullet.
