Hey all, just got into handguns, and am blowing alot of money on ammo. Is it worth it to reload 9MM Luger rather than buy boxed? I get 50rds Winclean for about 12.00$.

What does 50rd of reloads cost you?

ThankS!

My costs are approximately:
Jacketed bullet: ~9.5 cents
Primer: ~3.1 cents
Powder: ~1.5 cents
Brass: free
= 14.1 cents per round

If your barrel has regular rifling, pre-made unjacketed bullets are around 6 cents each, maybe less. Casting your own will bring the price down even lower.

Win Clean = $12.00 plus 14% tax $13.68 per 50-rounds

My Reloads = $0.15 a pop x 100 = $15.00 per 100-rounds tax included since the components' taxes were already paid for when you bought them. :)

Hey all, just got into handguns, and am blowing alot of money on ammo.

That is one of the reasons many experienced shooters recommend learning on a .22RF, 50 rounds for ~ $3. Shoot a few hundred .22 then switch to 9mm.

You can save more than the above stated cost if you use cast lead bullets rather than jacketed bullets. But some guns are meant only to shoot jacketed bullets (Glock). Also consider the cost of the reloader and the time involved.

I think it is the only way to go if you are concerned about the cost.

now i dont reload or anything atm but here is my opinion from looking into it

im starting with a 9mm to shoot, but also have my eye on a few guns in .44mag, .357 mag, ect. if all you are going to shoot is 9mm then might as well just buy them for the equipment cost and time involved. on the other hand if you are going to shoot and reload other calibers later then reload the 9mm as practice and supliment with factory (ie: if you shoot 1000 rounds a month reload half and buy half)

I cast my own bullets, and lately have had to pay for my lead(wheelweights getting hard to find) but I have my component cost down to 5.4 cents per 9mm( 124 grain) round, so 50 rounds would cost me $2.70 about the cost of premium 22LR, your mileage may vary but it sure is worth it to me.

Yes. It's a great hobby in and of itself and you'll shoot more (plus learn something about firearms and ammunition generally).

9mm

i reload for a bunch of different pistol and rifle cartridges so , overall it saves me a ton of money to reinvest in more ammo:D. However, if all i shot was 9mm and wasn't going to reload for anything else i would just buy ammo at case type volume. reloads cost approx $150/k, Ammomasters sells reloaded ammo for $177/k. for the $30-40/k i save i now don't have to scrounge and clean brass(1 hr/k) or spend time at the press 2-3hrs/k on my 550). Then throw on the cost of a progressive setup (close to $300 for a Lee, $500+ for blue or green). Again, this is if you only shoot 9 and have no interest in reloading other calibers. If you find yourself wanting to reload multiple calibers then definitely get into reloading, lots of satisfaction in feeding the pigs with your own handiwork.

Ammomasters? I've looked all around here in Montreal, and only the range seems to have ammo in bulk, and really is no big savings, 135$ + tx/500rd, if you buy by box it comes to 12$+tx/50, so around 14$ tax in x 10 is 140$, save a bit, but not a heck of alot.

I'll look around for a used setup before going to spend the $$ on new...:) any suggestions on what I need to start up?

Thanks!

No point in reloading pistol ammo if you don't have a progressive press - just too labour intensive - especially for a small case like the 9mm....

I cast my own bullets.
Get lead (Wheel weights) for free, buddy owns a tire shop.
I am a brass whore, range brass is free.
I pay for powder, primer. Don't count electricity to melt lead.
Box of 50 comes to $1.86
