Wondering if it’s worth it to track down parts kits now. They’re technically not going to be affected by the freeze, but do you folks reckon gun shops will keep bringing them in?

you waited till now?

I was finished buying spares of everything before the OIC even came down.
Fortune favors the prepared. I would imagine most shops specializing in pistol gear will begin to phase out parts orders by end of Q1 in 2023.... so to not be stuck come the fall of 2023 when all of the idiot king's "public safety" bullsh!t comes into affect.

I would say get’em if you can, while it is available.
Recently had to buy parts no longer available in Canada from outside the country and
some parts are not readily available and easy to source.
Also CBSA wait can be stretched. Longest wait this year was pkg sitting 3.5 month at CBSA

Personally, I've never had to replace anything. Most people don't have to replace anything. Unless you plan on shooting thousands of rounds, which costs a lot of money and time for range trips etc - yes we'd all love to - but if you're new, be realistic - you likely won't have to replace anything.

If you can afford it, sure, doesn't hurt to have extra springs, striker, maybe a drop=in trigger kit etc. Definitely buy at least 4 extra mags and base plates if you're the kind of guy that drops your mags.

But I've known guys with Glock 19s that have never even cleaned theirs after 20K+ rounds, let alone stripped or replaced parts.

IF and a big IF this "freeze" happens. I still find it interesting that they aren't calling it a ban. The CFO lady I talked to today thought it was weird that it was so busy, and she's right in the thick of it all. But doesn't hurt to have extra parts on hand if you can afford it, even if you never need them. I wouldn't hoard multiple of the same thing though - unless you're buying a cheap garbage gun to begin with or a quality one with a single known issue or part that has multiple complaints about a specific part.

Basically don't hoard toilet paper. There's always more.

I think this kind of thinking is extremism. Shops still sell AR15 parts. They all still have access to anything you need. Don't be a toilet paper hoarder. Stores still sell prohibited guns. It's like an oxymoron.

For the most part, that’s because they’re stuck with inventory since the OIC ban. There’s been a few businesses die since then too, with more casualties on the way from lost handgun revenue. Combine that with owners not being able to sell or transfer when they die and parts will inevitably become more scarce as demand slows in the coming years.

Only got my RPAL in April and first guns this month! But better late than never

Good on you!

We can speculate all we want, there's no way to be sure. Future availability may or may not be reduced - Just like anything else firearm related. Or internal combustion engines. Or toilet paper, or peanut butter...

I think it's more a question about the kind of person you are - If you're one of those who likes to be prepared, then it might be worth it.

But if you don't plan to use your guns much, then it's probably not worth it, regardless (and vice versa).

I personally think that the market for customizing handguns in Canada will explode after the ban. Replacement parts, custom parts etc will take the place of new gun sales.

If someone plans to get into something like IPSC, thousands of rounds goes by very fast. I have a few select spare parts like an extra slide stop, firing pin and springs. These are relatively inexpensive items until you beak something and need one, and can't find one.
