Hey everyone! If you're using a Raven 556 or know a bunch about it, or the options that I have picked, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Any tweaks or changes you'd recommend? I'm all ears, especially since I'm not super familiar with it myself. Thanks in advance for your help!
Also, does it take standard AR 556 magazines?
Cheers!

If you are going with the top charging handle and intend on using it exclusively you should purchase the side charging cover. Also, just use PMAGs, I don't see any point in buying the Raven mags.

My personal recommendation with the Raven is to purchase only the builders kit and then build it out fully custom with AR parts. Makes for a unique and more interesting build in my opinion. Might be out of your comfort zone though.

I went with a bare bone blem platinum. Waiting for the gen2 CH. Every thing else aside from the proprietary parts can be sourced else where for cheaper or I already have them.

You didn't do too badly but as others have already pointed out, you could cut some costs by ordering commonly available items such as a Muzzle Brake elsewhere. Were it my new Raven (I've had a Platinum for 3 months at 400+ rounds), I would do the following:

Ditch:

- Anti-Walk Pins - completely unnecessary, especially with a cassette-type Trigger Group such as the TriggerTech you have wisely opted for
- Muzzle Brake - competing designs with more conventional appearance are available for less money
- 13 and 5 Slot Picatinny Rails - buy polymer picatinny rails just about anywhere for a fractioin of the price of these alluminum versions
- Spare Wear Parts Kit - not at all necessary. Buy a spare, complete AR15 Bolt, put it in your shooting bag, and you are done for needed spares
- Magpul Buttstock and Pistol Grip Upgrade - Buy exactly what you want instead of the basic CTR stock offered. Magpul furniture is available everywhere

Add:

- Mid-Length Upper Brass Deflector - Folks will tell you to buy a cheap polymer version on #######. Those will not work with the nice Ejection Port Door (if you want one), and they are a bit "rough" in comparison to the anodized Aluminum Lockhart Version
- Mid-Length Side Charging Cover - As above. The Aluminum Lockhart version is much nicer than the cheap Polymer version. Otherwise, the Polymer will do the job if you want to save a few $$

Not Offered By LTAC:

- Standard H1 Buffer. Buy yourself a standard, H1 Buffer with the loose weights or Powdered Tungsten in the hollow interior. Those weights (or Tungsten powder) will provide a "dead-blow" to the rear of the Bolt-Carrier upon closure, eliminating the Bolt-Carrier Bounce that you will undoubtedly experience with the LTAC solid Buffer. Bolt-Carrier Bounce is a bad thiing, as it can cause (among other issues) light primer strikes depending on the timing of your Trigger press.
- Extra Magazines. These are readily available from numerous site sponsor vendors. Just google "PMags - Canada" and search for the best sale price,
- Muzzle Device. There are many designs/models and vendors to choose from
- Sling and QD Sling Loops. You bought the Sling attachment points, so I assume that you plan to run a sling. For a basic 2-point sling I recommend the Ferro Concepts "Slingster" available from RDSC (Red Deer Shooting Center)
- Upgraded Buttstock and Pistol Grip. I recommend shopping at RDSC, but any carrier of Magpul products ought to suffice so long as they have the model you want in the colour you desire (FDE)

Best of luck with your build! Keep the questions coming....

IMHO the only things that you really should get with the 5.56 Raven are the top charging handle, side plate and brass deflector.
The rest of it is superfluous to function and can largely be supplanted by off the shelf parts down the road from other vendors or a pre-existing parts supply if you have it.

If a guy is ok with left side charging instead of top would it be a good way to save some cash? Or does the left side charging suck on the raven? It’s like 350 bucks cheaper to not have the top charging and cover.

Sure, I don’t see why not. There was one guy on YouTube (Bats888) whose side charging handle kept backing out. Apart from that, I haven’t seen any other instances.

Lockhart is going to be releasing a gen 2 charging handle in the future, so you can pick up one of those later or a used gen 1 handle from guys who are upgrading.

It is worth trying it out.
The charging handle 'block' needs to be installed and you have to remove it every time you remove the bolt, so that will get old pretty quick if you are in the habit of cleaning your rifle often enough.

Also I see trigger tech has duty triggers for the ar15 3.5 pound 2 stage non adjustable. For 169 instead of 399 for the raven competition trigger. Do ar15 trigger packs like the trigger tech duty triggers work in the raven? It would be a good way to save a few more bucks.

Any AR15 Trigger Assembly will work in the Raven Lower Receiver.
