would u hunt long range elk with a .50cal ?

If you could hunt a elk at 1000m+ would you ever try it with a .50cal ?

Ide take a .338 forsure. .50 I don't know. never seen what one does to meat at distance b4 but im sure its not pretty.

I personally would never attempt a 1000 yard shot at any big game animal,my own self imposed limit is 500 yards.However what other hunters choose to do is up to them.

I do think the 500 yd setup you would use, is much different than a 1000 yd plus setup , for those that choose to use...Just figured I would add that for the folks that may have no idea...

For some of us long range hunting opens up more excitement. When you practice allot and know ur rifle, ammo and ballistic ability your good to go.

Even tho more times than not in the woods deer pop up around the 100m mark or closer I think every hunter should be able to confidently know his ammo out to 700m at least anyway.

If you are never going to shoot anywhere near 700m,what possible benefit can it be to the hunter?

Maybe because after you shoot 700, 500 feels like a gimme. On the other hand, is 100 is a long shot shot where you hunt then shortrange reactive skills would be a whole lot more useful.

pepole hunt with 50 bmg all the time in the US you just have to reload for hunting loads but i dont see the point.

if your using a .50 BMG would you REALLY need a soft point? besides other then velocity is not the shot the same diameter as a musket ball in .50 cal? I only ask as I know little to nothing about musket shot and the .50 BMG

Why limit yourself to a .50 at that range?

Why not a 20mm, or better yet, a 40mm Bofors?

That way you can be sure you obliterate the sucker.

I should mentions I'd never shoot past 500 yards on a range 200-250 is my max in the field might push it further if I knew the terrain I was going in to would require shots out to 500 yards by putting in lots of 300-500 yard shots but past that your really just starting to mess around with good chances the animal your shooting is gonna suffer.

In my neck of the worlds the woods are so dense that you would never be able to chase the animal if you missed at long distances of 1km and you usually don't see more than 200+ meters away
