Just curious. How many here would load there own shotgun slugs if they could be purchased like cast lead bullets??

I bought about 150 of the 525 gr Lyman slugs from Cannon's last year. Accuracy of my reloads in my rifled barreled 870 were not great. In the end I bought Federal Barnes Expander slugs for deer season.

I think casting your own is the way to go. I have a bunch of melted wheel weights in 3lb ingots ready to go - just need to buy the mold - BTW know anyone with a good 12 ga slug mold they want to part with?:D

You end up saving a pile of $ on slug and shipping costs.

Now, just to buy that mold and a cheap shotshell reloader. More #@**ing $$$!

And there you have it. For the cost of factory ammo, I can't be bothered loading for birdshot, but slugs...............

The cost of a cheap press isn't so bad, but when you add the cost and time of the lead pot and molds, it begins to fade.

It depends on the type of slug. These guys have some pretty wicked looking slugs for sale (they look like brenneke style slugs, with the plastic wad attached to the base); Ballistic Products Inc, Slug Loading Components. I plan on trying out some of their "dangerous game" and "thunderbolt" slugs in some reloads, as well as the AQ badminton birdie lookin' ones. Maybe a few roundballs for a baseline, as well :D So much fun!

What I'd REALLY be interested in is a mold for slugs like the dangerous game slugs they advertise, or any mold for any brenneke type slug for that matter. Maybe not the most realistic wish, but a guy can dream, can't he? Realistically, yes I would probably buy slugs if they were cheap and available in large volumes like cast lead bullets.
