Would you drill holes in an optic mount?

The absolute co-witness riser mount for the Hensoldt RSA-S weighs like it is made of steel. It's ridiculously heavy. One of the main selling points of the Hensoldt RSA-S is that it is the lightest red dot sight on the market (lighter than the Aimpoint Micro T1). With the riser mount it feels as heavy as an Aimpoint Pro.

Would you drill holes in this mount to get rid of some of the weight, if you felt that reducing weight was a worthy endeavour? (please note the condition to this question - I realize many of you don't think that losing weight is a worthy endeavour, ergo don't reply to this post).

Sure, but I might want to see if I could find a riser that was aluminum before I'd start drilling and fooling around with things, at least if you have a line on something you can replace it if need be.


But by all means, I hate when things are unnecessarily heavy!
 
Why not?
If that's what you want to do then go for it. Not like the thing is going to become too weak to support a little red dot unless you take way to much material out of it.
I like co-witness height mounts because it usually puts the sight at the perfect height for a great cheek-weld but I always keep my irons folded down, I hate cluttering up the sight picture unnecessarily.

I say do it but if it's steel you should buy some cold blue for it or paint it to protect it from corrosion.
Take some pics when you're done so we can see how it turned out.
 
Just a followup to this post on what I ended up doing:

1. I bought cobalt drill bits
2. I drilled two holes on the bottom side

While doing this I realized that the mount was indeed aluminum, but there were some sides that were unnecessarily thick - the thick part is what I drilled through. Also i noticed that much of the weight came from the attachment knobs which are unnecessarily large and are made of steel. so..

3. I went and bought some cheap riser mount off ebay with the assumption that the bolt threads are all the same size. The new cheap riser mount has small attachment knobs. The new ebay riser came in yesterday and yes - the knobs fit the RSA riser mount. Now the RSA riser mount is significantly lighter, and the weight feels right. Mission accomplished.

Note the RSA is an unusual height. Therefore the RSA absolute cowitness riser mount is unique in the world in height (it is 18.5mm high), and there is also no 1/3 cowitness option.
