Would You Officiate Only at an IPSC National Match

Would you be willing to officate at IPSC Nationals without competing in the match?

The thread on patching has me curious. How many IPSC shooters would be willing to attend a national match as a Match Official only? That is, you would not participate as a competitor at all.

It seems that this would be the only way to eliminate any question of possible bias from one competitor officiating another competitor.

To keep it simple, let's assume that all of your reasonable expenses would be covered. You would just be there to officiate in the style of an NHL referee.

Yep, I want to spend thousands of dollars, travel the Country, use my vacation time to NOT Shoot.

Honestly I do not mind spending my time shooting and officiating a National match...

When its time of Officiate... I don the RO hat... when its time to shoot... I don the shooting hat... I can multi-task and do both without making excuses.

MrFritz: interesting question, but we are not the US with 25000 members, where at least some will not mind RO'ing only.
Our RO's surely want to compete as well. Therefore, a good question to ask our Current RO's: Would they would be willing to shoot a pre-match and then work a 3 day dedicated match with their expenses and match fee paid?

OR, you could ask all shooters if they would rather shoot one of the following:
1) 5 day match with work day(s) for everyone, and be RO'd by their competitors and have their competitors play with props while working for say $175 or whatever the current nationals cost
2) 3 day match with dedicated staff, where shooters have to patch their own targets for say $250 or $260

not me, I'd rather shoot a Nats and not work at all. But I know that's not going to happen.
It'd be interesting to see dedicated CRO's and RO's and a Pre match, with squads taping (yes I know I like to prep instead of tape, but hey I'm willing to give it a try at a big match)

This is back to where I found the other thread confusing. If I understand you correctly, you are advocating having a full slate of ROs shoot in the pre-match and then RO full time. But one of your concerns seems to be that competitors will be ROing competitors. If the pre-match is just another schedule component of the same match, you still end up with the supposed threat of being ROed by someone that you are competing with.

Is this question for everyone or just those who would want to RO at the Can Nats?
I suppose the targets of the poll would be those who are qualified to be a match official at the Nationals.

Mr Fritz

The problem is three fold.
1/ RO's who only shoot the prematch albeit for score are not normally the top competitors trying to win or place well, with the current system they often are, and this leads to problems.
2/ When the RO's are competitors who change daily then the equality of ROing on that stage changes with the changing RO's. The same RO's and Cro's running the stage will be much more consistant.
3/ Not everyone will have to be at the range all day for 3 or 4 days as after the prematch the match should only take 3 half days. Saves competitors time and money.

As a shooter, you have the responsibility to request a different RO if you feel there is a conflict of interest. Of course, the rules do not specifiy this as a right (AFAIK) but you can ask , and I doubt very much indeed that the CRO would refuse.

According to the rules, all members of official regional teams must compete in the main match - that would nuke quite a few volunteers for the RO roster, at least from the smaller regions.

Good to see some serious discussion in this forum! :D

ENSHOOTER... I RO's with you at the Nats, you and your crew worked like dogs, and you kept a smile on.. That was great, I came over to give you a hand and I enjoyed that as well.

I drive a mean 5 iron... but suck at putting... maybe we should team up for 18 holes :)

I remember Pop. You where a blessing. I really feel bad for anyone who got assigned to that range and for those who worked their asses off I am eternally grateful.
Just so you are aware I consider Golf something to do while drinking beer outdoors. I am not serious and Nobody who is will golf with me.

Where does it stop?

Next it will be another shooter complaining that his "competition" is being RO'd by his buddy...can't have that

You don't get to pick your officials...

Yes, you're probably right.

This is ultimately a gentleman's game, and such things only work between gentlemen.

...and ladies, of course. :D
