I'll bet if the question was: "Would you take a long range (over 300 yards) shot at big grizzly boar, if you knew you be obliged to go track it through the bush to finish what you pooched in the
first place, because the 6' 6" 260 pound Fish and Wildlife officer was standing right there and would kick your sorry a$$ around the block if you didn't." this poll would be a whole lot different.
why would you need to go track it? that statement is implying you failed to do your part as a hunter and have wounded the game causing it to suffer, something responsible hunters should not do at even 2ft or 1000yds

Meh...300 yards really isn't that far for many shooters. If I've got a good rest, I honestly don't look at shots from 0-300 yards any differently. Beyond that...then ya other factors start to become more important.

I have missed clean at 60 yds, .....unbelievable but true...LOL --- so close or far, crap happens. Buck fever, wind, a twig, bad shell.....whatever.

Why oh why would one try and out guess one self in their shooting ability? You make your decision and live with it.

I don't understand what is so frickin' hard about a 300yd shot. Or why you need "an appropriate rifle, good scope, and a decent set-up".
My uncle used a .308 with iron sights and shot deer at 300yds. There is no mystical crap surrounding it. Anything based on the .308 case or larger will kill animals at 300yds, even the .303Br. And you don't need a scope. I do, but I didn't used to.
Age-old, basic sighting in procedure, 2" high at 100, keeps you in the zone at 300yds. True for almost every cartridge in .30 family. Why would that be, do you think?

300+ can be done with boring regularity with most cheap new bolt action rifles. 500+ is where things get more challenging due to drop and difficulty.

Need:
  • A good rest (bipod, bags, or decent improvised)
  • Sub MOA rifle/load combo.
  • Known or lased distance.
  • Known drop. Preferably tested, because many bullet makers exaggerate their BCs.
  • Still game. Bullet time of flight will be 1/2 a second or more, so firing on moving or spooked game is a bit silly.

With any wind. . .I won't take a shot that long. I'm not good enough at estimating wind, and it's too much for me to calculate drop and all the rest AND worry about wind. Some other shooters on this forum can probably take that into consideration like it's second nature, but not myself. With absolutely no wind and the above, no problem.

I'd have to agree 300 yards is not long range these days
I shooting a 6.5 x55 with great ballistics .did a big study .
Im using some great rounds and the 300 yards I'm grouping .58 of an inch
I'm using a 8x32x56 scope it's super close at 300
a mcmillian bedded Kreiger target barrel .
Like some one esle said out at 600-800 now we are worrying about wind gust we can't see or feel down range .
but 300 and 600 literally they are normal shots

It's up to the individual hunter to decide & make good on the shots that they are up to the task for (by whatever combination of personal training/skill, firearm/optics/ammo-load, range, & other conditions), and to have the discretion to pass up on the rest.

Having said that; I voted the '...very rare occasion' option, and that's being fair, realistic, & honest in that where I hunt most often. Around here I never have opportunity for a suitable 300m+ shot, and more often than not vision in brush very rarely extends as far as 100m. I can't remember the last time I had opportunity to take a deer in my part of Ontario that was as far away as 100m?

I've hunted out west (AB a few times so far, SK once), which can be a dramatically different story. I've made solid 300m+ shots out west using rifles & loads that I've trained with enough to be confident that they were up to the task. My biggest problem is judging distance at longer ranges, because it's not a skill critical for most 'local' hunting where I live.

A decent range-finder can add to the comfort-level in taking a particular shot, often whether you actually lase that animal, or even if you just use one like I sometimes do when practising judging distance to objects & checking my estimate against the laser.

yes if I was confident in the shot
I have let animals walk away at 100 because I couldn't get a clear shot in the brush and I have no problem with that
that's why its hunting not killing ethics and judgment is important
Im lucky enough to get the chance to practice a lot on a regular basis year round I practice off hand beyond 200yrds but wouldn't take an off hand shot on an animal over 100
on a good rest in an open area with everything aligned it would be no problem to take a shot longer than 300 with the right equipment and a good rest
but ive been hunting with a 12g lately so 50 and under is plenty far for that

Interesting timing, last year hunting with my uncle ranged a nice 4.pt whitey at 275 in an open field, I had my buck he looked through the scope a few times and turned it down, said he was not comfortable with that distance.I had sold him the 7mm remington he had, new what it could do ,great scope so just shrugged it off ,went home empty handed. This year dragged him to the range 4 -5 times pounded 3-4 boxes of shells each time ,dialed him in with some hornady factory ,(doesn't reload) this year I hear a bang ,drive down to the field ,there is a 4pt. whitey head shot 303 yds. from his casing and a big smile as well from my uncle.Says he probably wouldn't do it all the time but it felt right and he had trained enough to be confident...
