Get Writing Right Now!!!!
I strongly urge all gun owners to set aside a few minutes to put pen to paper (not just email) and write their MP's and MLA's. Urging them not to endorse a potential Handgun and/or Semi-Automatic BAN, and in fact to vote against one if it where to be tabled.
Be Polite, address it to the individual in question, and please do it soon, as the future of our sport and/or hobby is in jeopardy.
My Letter
I am a 36yr old former infantry soldier from the PPCLI who served in Afghanistan. I am also a competitive shooter in both the service rifle and service pistol disciplines. I would urge you not to consider any sort of semi-automatic or handgun ban. Instead of a knee-jerk attempt to add addition gun laws to our country, but add to the policing. The current “new” registrations system under the CFC is a much less personal system than the former Handgun registry run by the RCMP and administered jointly by the local police forces. Under the “old” system once would take the firearm to the registrar and the registrar would verify the firearm data and as well have a face to face meeting with the applicant.
It does not take a great deal of intelligence to figure out that a face to face meeting with an applicant is a better system than a phone in. Given we already have laws against murder and other offences against the person(s) additional laws are not the way to combat that sort of violence created by the misuse of firearms. I truly believe that the current system in inherently flawed and actually reduces public safety from how the older registration system operated. Understanding that it is people’s actions that cause harm not inanimate objects, is key to being able to curtail violence.
In conclusion I would like to restate my believe that retroactive movement back to the older RCMP administered system, in addition to creating more policing positions in the country is the way to deal with violent crime. Additionally it will not cripple a national treasure in the service firearm shooting community, a community that continually bolster the shooting strength of the Canadian Forces, particularly when our country is at war.
Yours truly,
Kevin S. Boland
