I’ve noticed lately that I’m missing the ability to shoot my AR15, so I figured that it’s time for me to grab something to sort of replace it. After some research and consideration, I’ve narrowed it down to 3 potential options - the WS-MCR, the WK-180, or the Renegade (all chambered in .223/5.56 or .223 Wylde). With this said, I’m wondering if I can get some insight from my fellow members, as I’m currently at a standstill with my decision and would freaky appreciate any feedback/advice that can be given.I recognize that each platform has differences, so I guess at this point I’m more so interested to hear about likes/dislikes, problems, and so on. Thanks in advance to those who take the time to respond.

I have both. Both have their place.

You'll need to decide what's more important to you.
(Look and feel of an AR-15 vs shooting semi-auto.)

The Renegade looks and feels exactly like my AR-15.
If you don't normally shoot rapid-fire and/or double-taps, it's a good option.

The WK-180 is a bit funky.
They honestly do not look or feel anything like an AR-15.
But if you like to shoot rapid-fire and/or double-taps, they're a good option.

So obviously the renegade is not an option, it's not a semi-auto it's just dressed up to look like one. You'll pay plenty then get something nowhere near as fun or as capable as the other 2. Your stuck with nearly all the same limitations but none of the advantages.

The real question is about the WK and WS-MCR

Both have had their teething issues but have now largely been resolved.

Both can take 5.56 and 7.62x39 uppers.
Both have comparable accuracy
Both have the same limitations on which magazines, replacement triggers etc. can be used

I've found Kodiak's customer service to be significantly better than that of Wolverine Supplies (I've had a rifle on warranty awaiting a replacement part from them for 11 months now)

However, the gas system is easier to access on the WS-MCR and the rail is easier to remove. Is that important? That's up to you, I personally didn't clean my WK180C gas parts for over 4000 rounds and it just didn't give a damn.

The WS-MCR if online reports are to be believed appears to be made to a slightly higher quality than the WK, but beyond that there's not much of a difference.

My experience lies only with the WK (I have put 12,000 rounds through this platform) so my opinion is biased through literally only using that rifle.

If I was to be buying one, and only one I'd maybe choose the WS-MCR if both are available as I like the rear locking pin and that Wolverine is taking the govt to court.

IMO the ONLY thing going for the MCR/WCR is it's semi-auto and non-restricted (if you like carrying a pig) .... when it works.

Given that I'd go for the Renegade. Yes, sucks that it's single shot but at least it will work.

So many say the MCR/ACR is an AR wannabe. Bull. It's not even in the league of an AR and never will be.

Agreed.

If the rifle is meant for bench-shooting or hunting; I would definitely recommend the Renegade.

I love my mcr. Probably 500 rounds down barrel. For what I wanted it's great. Only thing for me was it didn't like 62 grain federal .223 but 55 grain in either .233 or .556 it ate it without By complaints. Not sure if I just got a bad batch of ammo because my keltec su-16 hated it too.

Interesting post. I have a WK and really like it and every time I head to one of my LGS, I always seem to ask them to let me handle their Renegade. I really like the look of it and like the fact that it's Canadian made. I don't know enough about straight pull to know why not just make it a bolt action (I guess it's one backward movement instead of backward and up and then down and then forward). I was close to ordering a Renegade directly from MRA, until I found out they only have the 16" barrel in stock. Been looking at the BCL Bison too. Seems like the feedback on the Renegade is fairly positive.

The only thing I don't like about my WK is there is no bolt hold open, and I have to manually stick my hand in the magwell to get it to catch - I think TNA has a third party bolt catch that can be installed. Other than that, the WK has been fun to shoot - I have a Lantac Dragon on mine which reduces the recoil a bit but it is loud (guess that's the tradeoff). WK accepts various AR mags, and has not given me any problems. Charging handle can go on both sides. Decent length, decent weight, I got the Magpul version. I have heard that the customer service is quite good for those who have contacted them.

Myself and two pals have WK’s. Real fun rifles. Mine will shoot 1.25 moa with 55gr Herters,PMC, and Win white box. That’s with a holosun red dot at 100m prone off my range bag. My rifle has about 3000rds through it. The odd stovepipe does occurs here and there. One of the WK in our group is pretty unreliable. Lots of stovepipes and now it suffers failures to feed on occasion. There is still work to do on the WK. but what are your other options? I dont see the MCR being much different but I have zero experience with one.

Renegade isn’t an option IMO. I think it would be less fun than a bolt action lol. Not sure why anyone would even consider purchasing one. Maybe it’s good for posing and taking photos with your plate carriers on??? Not sure.

I bought a Renegade at the end of July, mostly due to a great price on an MK1 version.

I have not owned an AR15 before, but am told it is close to the feel. I do absolutely love the feel and ergonomics of the Renegade. It is lighter than my WK.

The straight pull, no matter how adept I can get at pulling it, does not compare to a semi-auto. Also I have found that my Renegade does not like a full five-round PMAG - the mag will only latch properly and feed on a pinned-to-five mag only filled to four rounds.

The Renegade MK1 also has no traditional bolt hold open/bolt catch. You can have the bolt held open with an empty magazine, but once you eject the magazine the bolt closes. The newer MK2 version has a bolt catch built in.

Accuracy wise, the WK is very good. My charging handle and pistol are (still) intact, and so far, no issues with it, except for the occasional rattle when handling it. It works with all magazines filled to capacity (5).

try 10 round pistol mag please.

Yup, I have tried the 10 round LAR15 metal pistol mags from C Products Defense. Not a single problem in using these mags, even when loaded fully. I love those things and wish I had bought more of those rather than having another 20+ brand new in package PMAGs that I bought way before I realized that they have some issues with some of my guns.

I thought the Renegade concept was interesting. But having seen one on the range it struck me as a sad facsimile. I could never bring myself to get one. The WK or MCR are the obvious choice to me. I've personally seen no failures from the test group of 2 MCR's friends of mine have run and failures of varying degrees from both WK's 2 friends have owned. I personally think the MCR is a better execution both in quality and form. The WK does seem to have worked out its issues now though.

How is this not an option? Small and light, just under 7lb as you see it. Why go straight pull? So you are not limited to 18" barrel. This particular one has 12" 6.5 grendel barrel. I think it's a very solid option. Great for hunting most game with in few hundred meters.

The Renegade is great for a NR short barrel rifle, great for hunting or in a truck. I've got a 6.5 Grendel with a 12.5" barrel.

I've also got a few WS-MCR rifles and the only real complaint I have is that they are heavy. The newly designed receivers that are coming out might help mitigate that.

After many thousand rounds through the WS-MCR rifles I own I would say they are very reliable, plus the piston gas system feels better to shoot than a AR DI system. And the MCR stays so clean inside!
