Wsm 2.0!

A friend of mine once shot a mule buck with an SST out of his 257 weatherby mag at over 200 yards and it completely destroyed the front quarter. easy to imagine the devestation that might occur with these new loads. FS

You'd think that Hornady would load these with their 'premium' interbonds.

This really seems like a half-assed 'me too' attempt. I like the idea of the 338 - Winchester SHOULD have made a 338 WSM, so there is a gap there. But the 300 RCM is 10 years too late.

Gotta wonder what's happening at Hornady these days. They did well with the 204 and HMR's, but WTF is with all the useless new ones destined for failure like the RCM's, the 308 Marlin, 30 TC and that silly 375 Ruger :p?

I'm not surprised. Ruger briefly offered the .300WSM and .325 WSM in it's Frontier rifles, then stopped rather than pay royalties. Given the success of the .375 Ruger it's no surprise that they'd neck it down.

Hmm. - I wonder if the .338 will be available in the Ruger Frontier.:D

Interesting. It almost seems like we're heading back to the days of proprietary cartridges. Each manufacturer has its own lineup of cartridges, chambered exclusively in their own rifles.

I'm not sure how much the 338 is an improvement over my "old" 338 win mag. the 338 win mag is a relatively modern cartridge with good efficiency, and it's not really that long. And I don't see any 250 grain offerings in this round - is the case too short? I don't think I'll be getting one unless I'm really missing something here.

Who says it has to be? It fits in a short action. Which shaves a half pound off the weight of the rifle, adds a half-inch more effective length to the barrel without increasing it's overall length. Short actions are also more rigid which arguable increases accuracy, but more importantly (to me, anyway) contributes to a more positive bolt-throw feeling (less wobble/slop). And I prefer the shorter bolt throw.

I think WSM fans were much disappointed by the compromise 325, so the 338 RCM may sell OK... it really depends on whether they suffer from any reloading quirks or odd accuracy. I can't see a reason in the world for the 300RCM, except for the small legion of Ruger fans who won't buy any other brand...
