WSM ammo - why so pricey???

Ok guys quick question - does anyone know why the WSM ammo is so much more expensive to buy than the standard calibre stuff? 270 WSM for example is double the cost of 270 win. Same or worse for the other WSM calibres?

So why is that?

Brass is about the same amount either way - same powder more or less - same buller & primer.

Has anyone asked the dealers this?

It's mainly because the whole concept is a scam.

The 270wsm and 300wsm ammo are very close to the 7mm Mag and 300 WinMAG, but they allow you to use a short action rifle with a negligibile weight saving. (Zero weight saving for models built on a long action like the Tikka 3)

You also get the ability to pay way more for ammo. Not to mention that availability is not as good as the "classic" calibers.

Don't for get the RSAUM and WSSM calibres, which allow you to pay even more for ammo that's even harder to find.

It's new, and they were basically brought in to make more money in the first place.

At my local Can Tire:

Federal Power Shock 180gr 300 winmag $24.99
Federal Power Shock 180gr 300 WSM $39.99

Plus the WSM rifles often hold one round less than the normal magnums...

You won't find me buying a WSM...
 
"...asked the dealers..." It has nothing to do with the dealers. It's the costs involved with developing a new cartridge and marketing it. Also has the word 'magnum' in the name.
 
WSM stands for We can Sell for More money.:p

Seriously, you could probably carry all the WSM in, say, 270, that gets fired off in Canada in one year in a wheel barrow, whereas regular 270, you would need a good sized truck. Quantity (ideally) lowers the cost to the consumer.

(Maybe a bit over simplified, but.....)
 
It is pricier to keep the riff raff from shooting the elite calibers...

Just kidding even I shoot a WSM

Supply and demand is pretty much it.

It isn't the same brass, it is a much bigger piece,the only thing the same is the size of the hole.
Higher case capacity holds more powder.

not the same primer, it is a magnum primer.
they don't call it short MAGNUM for nothing. FS

You hit it right! The WSm is a bit faster but 150 feet/sec over a 200 yard shot, you have to decide if it is worth it.

Most rifles are not shorter than long action rifles and you get to pay $8-20.00 more per box.
 
WSM's are a reloader's dream cartridge, they give you the most efficiency case design possible and put it in a shorter rifle. A lot of the criticism you hear about the WSM,RSAUM cartridges is from guy's who have no experience with them and just want to spread negativity because it's not a 300wm,7mm rem mag. 270. All of which are still great cartridges but use more powder to obtain same velocity as it's WSM,RSAUM cartridge.

A reloader's dream cartridge they are not!! Efficiency...give me a break! :nest: [Before you go off accusing me of having no experience with them, I presently have WSM chamberings, and I do use them....shot a moose with one this fall.] The 300 WSM achieves the exact same results with the same amount of powder as does the 300 H&H magnum. The short fat concept works great when loading singly, but not all rifles feed them as well as their longer, slimmer counterparts. FL sizing is frequently a problem, and the factory loads are loaded plenty "hot" in an attempt by the factories to duplicate larger case performance. My SAUM marked the head of the brass with factory loads every time. If I was reloading and saw that, I would be backing off at least 2 grains. Loaded to equal pressures, the SAUM's & the WSM's do not equal the time tested 300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, etc. It's great concept to market something new and ["improved"??] , but does nothing that has not been already done over and over again. Then of course, the factories can screw the shooting public for higher prices for ammo, brass, etc. Great idea to keep something going on these forums, too! ;):D Regards, Eagleye.

but i dont have a wheel barrow... i do have a truck, does that mean i get cheeper ammo?
