Just use a good enamel based paint...Testors model paint works great. It provides a good-looking, durable finish...most pistol sights are painted in with enamel right from the factory.

Nail Polish with a coat of clear works very well and is very durable.

Just ask any women you know for nail polish. My sister has drawers full so I had a lot to choose from. I found the red and neon greens (like the fibre optic colours) worked the best.
x2. I tried red on my Ruger GP100, was ok, but then went to safety orange. Like! Fast, easy and durable. Also pretty cheap if you get it at the dollar store.
I have painted many of my front sights with florescent red. But the results were poor until a CGNr explained that the first step is a bright white paint. After that is dry, paint on the red. the result is outstanding.
I bought two little jars of paint at a model store.

Flourescent craft paint (orange and yellow for me) from wal mart or any craft store works well. Have to reapply every six months or so. Bottle costs about $1 each and lasts 5 life times. I use a toothpick to apply it with the slide off and just standing on end until it dries

Walmart/Canadian Tire sells kits (~ $10-$50), or a hobby/RC store if you just want the 2 colors (~ $3 ea).
White base coat, orange on top.

Thank you very much for passing this along, Ganderite! I've been painting sights for awhile and was often less than enthralled with the results of orange or red paint by itself...I'm going to try this white base coat technique for sure!!
Not much of a photographer, but here you go....as an aside, I didn't like the white on the rear site, so just touched it with a yellow hi lighter pen I had in my desk. I like the contrast.
